NDA Stages Major Protest in Madurai Over Alleged ₹200-Crore Property Tax Scam
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) organized a significant demonstration at Munichalai junction in Madurai on Thursday, voicing strong demands for the arrest of individuals allegedly involved in a massive ₹200-crore property tax scam within the Madurai Corporation. The protest highlighted growing public discontent over corruption and inadequate civic amenities in the region.
Widespread Participation and Key Demands
More than 500 cadres actively participated in the protest, which was led by prominent leaders Sellur K Raju and V V Rajan Chellappa. The demonstration saw involvement from various political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam, and Pattali Makkal Katchi. In addition to calling for legal action against the scam, protesters emphasized urgent improvements to civic infrastructure, such as road repairs, and the full implementation of the Mullai Periyar Combined Drinking Water Project to address water supply issues.
Allegations of Systemic Corruption
Addressing the gathering, Sellur K Raju made serious allegations of widespread corruption within the civic body. He sarcastically remarked that the DMK deserves a Nobel Prize for finding ways to corrupt even the air, accusing the administration of operating under a pervasive commission culture. Raju further claimed that obtaining layout approvals often required bribes as high as ₹30 lakh, illustrating the depth of the alleged malpractice.
Political Implications and Future Actions
Raju also hinted at political repercussions, stating that once the regime changes after the 2026 elections, a detailed corruption list would be submitted to Edappadi K Palaniswami to ensure accountability and action against those responsible. This protest underscores ongoing tensions in Madurai's political landscape and raises critical questions about governance and transparency in local administration.
