Tamil Nadu's New Ukkadam Bus Terminal-1 Inaugurated by CM Stalin in Coimbatore

In a significant development for urban infrastructure, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the new Ukkadam Bus Terminal-1 in Coimbatore through a videoconference from Chennai on March 14, 2026. This inauguration marks a major step forward in improving public transport facilities and streamlining bus operations in the bustling city of Coimbatore.

Rs 21.55 Crore Plan for Two Modern Bus Terminals in Ukkadam

The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has planned the construction of two state-of-the-art bus terminals in Ukkadam with a total project cost of Rs 21.55 crore. This initiative aims to enhance passenger facilities and create a more efficient transport hub for the region. The newly inaugurated Terminal-1 is the first phase of this ambitious project.

Terminal-1 Built on 3.27 Acres at a Cost of Rs 13 Crore

The first terminal has been constructed on 3.27 acres of land located opposite Ukkadam Periyakulam, with an investment of Rs 13 crore. This strategic location is designed to serve as a major transport hub for buses operating through the busy Ukkadam area, addressing long-standing congestion and accessibility issues.

28 Bus Bays with Commercial Amenities for Passengers

The newly built terminal includes 28 bus bays, providing ample space for bus operations. In addition to transportation facilities, the terminal offers commercial amenities such as 14 shops and two food courts, ensuring that passengers have access to essential services and refreshments during their travel.

Modern Passenger Facilities at the State-of-the-Art Terminal

To improve passenger comfort, the bus terminal features a spacious waiting area with tensile roofing and seating capacity for 60 passengers. Other modern facilities include a feeding room for mothers, public Wi-Fi, and mobile charging stations, making it a convenient and user-friendly space for commuters.

Digital Bus Tracking and Advanced Security Systems

A corporation official highlighted that digital bus tracking systems will be installed soon. "Once the data is received, bus numbers, destinations, and arrival and departure timings will be displayed at the entrance for passengers, similar to systems at airports," the official stated. Additionally, 30 CCTV cameras will be installed with a live monitoring room and emergency response systems to ensure safety and security.

Inauguration of Mudhalvar Padaippagam Centres

Alongside the bus terminal, Chief Minister Stalin also inaugurated two Mudhalvar Padaippagam reading and co-working spaces in Coimbatore. These facilities, located at Prabhu Nagar in Kavundampalayam and Gandhi Maa Nagar, were constructed at a cost of Rs 3.36 crore each. They are designed to support reading and collaborative workspaces for residents, further enhancing community infrastructure in the city.
