Nishant Kumar Set for Grand Political Debut with Janata Dal United
In a significant political development, Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is poised to join the Janata Dal United (JDU) in a grand political debut on March 8. The party made this announcement on Friday, even as Nitish Kumar himself emphasized that his decision to move to the Rajya Sabha and step down as Bihar's chief minister was entirely his own and irreversible.
Unanimous Endorsement at Key JDU Meeting
At a crucial JDU meeting held at Nitish Kumar's official residence, a resolution was moved by the party's national working president, Sanjay Jha, to felicitate the entry of Nishant Kumar. This resolution received unanimous endorsement from all Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) present. JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar later confirmed this historic decision, stating that it marks a new chapter for the party.
Nishant Kumar, who was previously reluctant to enter politics, relented after extensive discussions with his father, party supporters, and other family members. An alumnus of the prestigious BIT Mesra engineering institute in Jharkhand, his low-profile background has sparked intense speculation about his future role within the party and government.
Potential Leadership Roles and Dynastic Shift
There is widespread speculation that Nishant Kumar could be appointed as deputy chief minister in a new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government or given a key organizational role within the JDU. This move is seen as a strategic step to prevent a leadership vacuum in Bihar, especially if Nitish Kumar shifts his focus to Delhi upon joining the Rajya Sabha.
The decision is particularly notable because Nitish Kumar has long taken a strong stand against dynastic politics in Indian political circles. However, he is now witnessing his only son enter public life at the age of 50, marking a potential shift in his political stance. JDU senior leader Vijay Choudhary confirmed that the chief minister gave the green signal for Nishant's entry into politics.
Following his formal entry into the party, Nishant Kumar is expected to hit the ground running. He plans to tour Bihar extensively to interact with party functionaries and workers, as announced by spokesperson Neeraj Kumar. This grassroots engagement is aimed at building his political base and understanding the state's dynamics.
Nitish Kumar Reassures Party on Rajya Sabha Move
Later during the meeting, JDU president Nitish Kumar addressed party legislators, reassuring them about his impending move to the Rajya Sabha. He firmly rubbished any suggestions that he was nudged or pressured to step down as chief minister, stressing that he will continue to monitor "everything" in the interest of Bihar's development.
Nitish Kumar requested party legislators to allow him to go to Parliament, drawing on his past experience. "When I was working with former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee at the Centre, Vajpayee Ji used to advise me to remain in Delhi. But I told him my first priority was Bihar and I returned. Now I have decided to go to the Rajya Sabha. I will arrange a house in Patna and spend more time in Bihar. You will not face any difficulty. All work started by our government will continue uninterrupted," Nitish said, offering reassurance to his party members.
He emphasized that despite his Rajya Sabha responsibilities, he intends to spend more time in Bihar to ensure continuity in governance and development projects. This move is seen as an effort to balance his national political aspirations with his commitment to the state's progress.
