Noida Protests Continue, Police Alert After Wage Hike Announcement

Fresh Protests Erupt in Noida Despite Government Wage Hike and Police Vigilance

Even as the Uttar Pradesh government announced an interim wage increase and deployed heavy police forces to restore calm following Monday's violent clashes, fresh protests were reported in Noida on Tuesday. Security personnel remain on high alert across industrial and residential areas, with continuous route marches conducted since early morning to prevent further escalation.

Police officials stated that workers gathered at a few locations were quickly dispersed through dialogue, maintaining that the situation is under control. Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh confirmed that law and order has been restored across the district, though surveillance continues in sensitive pockets.

Arrests and FIRs Filed in Connection with Monday's Violence

Authorities have arrested more than 300 individuals and registered seven FIRs in relation to Monday's large-scale unrest, which involved arson, vandalism, and disruptions across multiple industrial clusters. Security measures have been intensified at key locations, including Cleo County, Gari Chaukhandi, Sector 121, and Sector 70, where new gatherings were reported but remained peaceful.

These recent protests, primarily involving domestic workers demanding higher wages, were managed through coordination and did not turn violent. However, police have issued warnings against spreading rumors or unverified information, threatening legal action against those involved in misinformation campaigns.

WhatsApp Syndicate Under Investigation for Organized Mobilization

Investigators are probing a possible organized network operating through WhatsApp groups to mobilize participants. Police revealed that several groups were created over the past two days, with members added via QR codes and widely shared links among workers.

Digital forensic analysis of seized mobile phones has uncovered evidence of coordinated communication patterns, suggesting these platforms were used to circulate provocative messages and organize gatherings across multiple sites. Efforts are underway to trace funding sources and determine if external support, within or outside the state, played a role.

Outsiders Blamed for Escalation During Monday's Clashes

Police reiterated that Monday's violence escalated after groups described as outsiders entered protest sites, even as workers had begun dispersing peacefully. These elements allegedly moved through bordering areas and incited fresh tensions, leading to clashes in locations such as Sector 63 and near industrial facilities in Phase-2.

Officials estimated that around 40,000 to 45,000 workers gathered across more than 80 locations at the peak of the protests, with violence reported at several points before being controlled through coordinated police action.

Interim Wage Hike Announced Amid Unrest

In response to the agitation, a high-level committee constituted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an interim increase of approximately 21% in minimum wages for workers in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad. The revised wage structure, effective from April 1, raises monthly earnings to:

  • Rs 13,690 for unskilled workers
  • Rs 15,059 for semi-skilled workers
  • Rs 16,868 for skilled workers

The government has accepted four of the five key demands raised by workers and is working toward a negotiated resolution for the remaining issues, with further recommendations expected soon.

Political Blame Game Intensifies Over Labor Unrest

The unrest has sparked a political exchange, with Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi accusing the Samajwadi Party and the Indian National Congress of attempting to disrupt law and order by provoking unrest through misinformation.

Opposition leaders have rejected these allegations. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav argued that the government is deflecting from genuine labor grievances, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi supported the workers, citing economic distress due to rising inflation and stagnant wages.

Authorities Maintain Control and Continue Monitoring

Police have affirmed that the situation across the district is now under control, with only minimum necessary force used during Monday's clashes. They praised the coordinated response of police units in restoring order and have appealed for calm among citizens.

Investigations into organized mobilization networks, the role of outsiders, and possible coordinated attempts behind the unrest are ongoing, as authorities remain vigilant to prevent future incidents.
