Odisha Assembly Proceedings Disrupted by Congress Protest Over LPG Supply Issues
Bhubaneswar witnessed significant political turmoil on Thursday as Congress legislators staged a vociferous demonstration inside the Odisha Legislative Assembly, protesting what they described as a severe shortage of LPG cylinders across the state. The protest escalated to such an extent that Speaker Surama Padhy was compelled to adjourn the House proceedings not once, but twice during the day.
Chaos Erupts During Question Hour
The disruption commenced shortly after the House reconvened for the crucial Question Hour session. Congress MLAs, led by their legislature party leader Rama Chandra Kadam, stormed into the well of the assembly, raising slogans and holding placards that highlighted the alleged cooking gas crisis affecting ordinary citizens. The legislators demanded immediate government intervention and a clear, transparent statement guaranteeing uninterrupted LPG supply to all households.
Speaker Surama Padhy made repeated appeals to the agitating members, urging them to return to their designated seats and allow the parliamentary proceedings to continue smoothly. However, with the commotion showing no signs of abating, she first announced an adjournment until 11:30 AM, and later, as the protests persisted, extended it further until 4 PM in the afternoon.
Political Accusations and Counterclaims
The protest sparked a heated exchange of accusations among the major political parties represented in the assembly. Congress leader Rama Chandra Kadam emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The government must be transparent and clarify the LPG supply situation immediately. People across Odisha are facing severe inconvenience, and we cannot remain silent spectators."
In a sharp rebuttal, BJP MLA Irasis Acharya accused the Congress of orchestrating the disruption under external directives. "Congress appears to be acting upon directions from Delhi to disrupt proceedings instead of participating in constructive discussions. It is deplorable that they, along with supporting BJD members, are disrupting both Question Hour and Zero Hour. The Prime Minister has already clarified there is no need to panic over LPG supply. Their leader Rahul Gandhi is replicating the same disruptive tactics in the Lok Sabha that their MLAs are employing here," Acharya asserted.
Contrasting the BJP's stance, BJD MLA Sarada Prasanna Jena launched a scathing criticism against the state government, alleging complete detachment from ground realities. "The government is completely cut off from people's problems. There is already an acute shortage of LPG in many areas, and the administration has done nothing substantial to address it. Consequently, black marketing activities have also surged, exacerbating the crisis for common citizens," Jena remarked.
