Odisha Govt: No Shortage of LPG, Petrol, Diesel in State

Odisha Government Reassures Public on LPG and Fuel Availability

In a significant development, the Odisha government has officially declared that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders, petrol, or diesel across the state. This announcement came during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg on Tuesday, aimed at addressing growing concerns over fuel supplies amidst global geopolitical tensions.

Government and OMCs Collaborate to Ensure Stability

Chief Secretary Anu Garg convened a crucial meeting with representatives from major oil marketing companies (OMCs) and officials of the food supplies and consumer welfare department. During the discussions, the department provided firm assurances that ample stocks of LPG cylinders are available for domestic consumers, effectively dispelling fears of a supply crunch.

Garg emphasized the importance of maintaining public calm, urging citizens not to succumb to panic regarding LPG or fuel shortages. The meeting delved into intricate details concerning the retail and wholesale distribution networks for LPG, with a focus on ensuring seamless operations.

Supply Chain and Institutional Support Strengthened

Furthermore, Garg confirmed that the supply of LPG to critical institutions such as educational establishments and hospitals remains uninterrupted. She issued directives to OMC authorities to uphold a balanced supply chain, guaranteeing the consistent availability of LPG and fuel at all necessary facilities.

In a proactive move, Garg instructed the consumer welfare department and oil companies to launch awareness initiatives. These efforts are designed to regularly inform the public about the status of cooking gas, petrol, and diesel availability, thereby fostering transparency and trust.

Addressing Local Complaints and Industry Concerns

Despite the government's assurances, local issues have surfaced. In Bhubaneswar's Khandagiri area, customers queued outside a gas agency, reporting delays in LPG cylinder refills. They claimed bookings were made 15 to 25 days prior without fulfillment, attributing the holdup to anxieties over the West Asia conflict. Agency personnel cited transportation delays and online payment glitches as contributing factors, though noted that such crowding was isolated to Khandagiri, with no similar reports from other agencies in Bhubaneswar or Cuttack.

Biswanath Mukherjee, President of the Odisha LPG Distributors’ Association (OLPGDA), clarified that there is no actual shortage from key OMCs like Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum, and Bharat Petroleum. However, he acknowledged that the lock-in period for domestic LPG cylinder refill bookings has been extended to 25 days due to the ongoing war situation, a measure aimed at managing demand effectively.

Commercial Sector Faces Challenges

On a different front, the commercial sector is experiencing disruptions. Hotels and restaurants in Bhubaneswar have reported delays in receiving commercial LPG cylinders. Following similar alerts from industry bodies in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai, the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha submitted a memorandum to Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighting these supply issues.

Aditya Sahu, a hotel owner in the city, shared that commercial cylinders are in short supply, with refills delayed and often procured at higher rates. "We typically require 3 to 4 cylinders on busy days like Wednesdays and weekends, but recent delays, linked to the war, have forced us to pay premium prices," he explained.

The OLPGDA has also cautioned dealers against engaging in black marketing of cylinders, responding to complaints about refill delays and ensuring ethical practices are maintained.

Overall, while the Odisha government asserts robust supplies for domestic needs, the commercial sector grapples with logistical hurdles, underscoring the complex dynamics of fuel distribution in times of international conflict.
