In a significant move to honor a key figure of Odisha's tribal resistance, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a comprehensive development package for the legacy of Shaheed Madho Singh. The announcements, made on Wednesday, include the construction of a memorial, the development of his birthplace as a heritage village, and educational initiatives in his name, with a total financial outlay running into crores of rupees.
Memorial Complex and Heritage Village Development
The centerpiece of the tribute is a memorial complex worth Rs 6.26 crore to be built at Ghess village in the Bargarh district. This complex will feature a statue of the martyr, a welcome arch, and a community centre, serving as a focal point for remembrance and community gatherings.
Going a step further, the state government plans to develop Ghess village itself, the birthplace of Madho Singh, under the Baraputra Heritage Village Scheme. An investment of Rs 15 crore has been earmarked for this project, aiming to preserve and promote the historical and cultural significance of the site.
Educational Institutions Renamed and Upgraded
In the realm of education, the Chief Minister declared that the local Ghess College will be renamed as the Shaheed Madho Singh Memorial College. Furthermore, a new girls' hostel with a capacity of 100 seats will be constructed at the college at a cost of Rs 4.40 crore. The announcement also includes plans for comprehensive infrastructure upgrades for the institution, aiming to boost educational facilities in the region.
Honoring a Supreme Sacrifice and Launching a New Scheme
Addressing the public, CM Majhi highlighted the extraordinary nature of Madho Singh's sacrifice during the first war of Indian Independence in 1857. He noted that the martyr laid down his life for the nation alongside his four sons, a act he described as rare not just in Indian but in world history. Majhi emphasized that patriots like Madho Singh brought glory to humanity through their ultimate sacrifice.
The Chief Minister also underscored the vital role played by tribal communities, not only in armed resistance but also in fostering social harmony. He specifically appreciated the Binjhal community and the Adivasi Kalyan Sangh for their efforts in preserving the martyr's legacy for future generations.
In a practical step to support tribal students, Majhi launched the Shaheed Madho Singh Hatkharcha Scheme. Under this initiative, students studying in classes IX and XI will receive a one-time financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to help curb school dropouts. He revealed that 100 students from the Ghess gram panchayat have already benefitted from this newly introduced scheme.
The government reiterated its commitment to honoring the great sons of the soil by developing their birthplaces and using their ideals to inspire the younger generation, thereby strengthening Odia pride and cultural identity.
