Odisha Launches Major Traffic Enforcement Drive, Issues Rs 9.6 Crore in Fines on First Day
The Odisha transport department has initiated a rigorous 10-day special enforcement campaign targeting traffic violators across the state, resulting in substantial penalties on its inaugural day. On Saturday, the first day of the drive, authorities issued fines amounting to a staggering Rs 9.6 crore against 17,800 individuals for various traffic offenses.
Response to Rising Accident Statistics
This intensive campaign was launched directly in response to a concerning increase in road accidents and fatalities throughout Odisha. Recent state police data reveals alarming trends: in 2025, a total of 6,483 people lost their lives in road accidents, marking a 5.6% rise from the 6,142 deaths recorded in 2024. Furthermore, the number of accidents itself climbed by 3.3%, escalating from 12,375 incidents in 2024 to 12,782 in 2025.
Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur provided detailed figures, stating, "On the first day alone, 17,831 e-challans were issued, amounting to fines of Rs 9,57,59,504. Additionally, at least 64 vehicles were detained for serious violations of fundamental road safety rules."
Comprehensive Enforcement Strategy
The drive, initiated under the directive of Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, is scheduled to continue until March 31. It involves coordinated crackdowns during both morning and evening hours to maximize impact. Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) have established special teams specifically tasked with targeting the primary causes of accidents.
Key violations under strict scrutiny include:
- Speeding and reckless driving
- Driving under the influence of alcohol
- Riding without helmets
- Driving on the wrong side of the road
- Illegal parking practices
- Using mobile phones while driving
- Overloading vehicles beyond capacity
Enforcement efforts have been significantly intensified at identified accident-prone locations, including major highways, industrial zones, busy city roads, critical intersections, crowded market areas, and bus stands. Heavy vehicles involved in mining and construction activities are receiving particular attention regarding license compliance and adherence to load regulations.
Parallel Awareness and Community Programs
Alongside the strict enforcement measures, the transport department has rolled out extensive awareness programs across the state. Drivers are being actively counselled on essential road safety practices, while the general public is being educated about the importance of wearing helmets and seatbelts, as well as the severe dangers associated with speeding.
In Bhubaneswar, special sessions were organized for long-distance bus drivers and their support staff. Meanwhile, in Jajpur district, a community-focused program emphasized strategies for reducing vehicular pollution. Future plans include conducting blood donation camps, providing eye check-ups for drivers, holding advisory sessions for both drivers and passengers, and launching awareness drives in schools, colleges, and various public spaces.
Commissioner Thakur emphasized the collaborative approach, noting, "The transport department, district administration, and police are working jointly to ensure the effective implementation of this campaign. Our strategy combines stringent enforcement with proactive community engagement to ultimately reduce accidents and save lives on Odisha's roads."
This integrated initiative represents a determined effort by the state authorities to tackle the growing road safety crisis through a dual strategy of penalty and persuasion, aiming to foster a lasting culture of responsible driving.
