In a sharp political attack, Jammu and Kashmir Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma launched a scathing critique against former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, asserting that the National Conference leader would not have stepped down from his post even if he were a municipal councillor. The remark came amid ongoing political tensions in the union territory, with Sharma questioning Abdullah's commitment to democratic principles.
Sharma's Allegations
Speaking to media persons in Jammu, Sharma said, "Omar Abdullah's track record shows that he clings to power at any cost. He wouldn't have resigned even if he were a councillor in a municipal committee." The LoP accused Abdullah of lacking moral integrity and using political office for personal gains. He further alleged that the former chief minister's decision to remain in the legislative assembly despite controversies reflects a disregard for public sentiment.
Political Context
The remarks come weeks after Omar Abdullah faced criticism for not resigning from the assembly following a controversial statement on Article 370. Abdullah had earlier stated that he would not resign as an MLA unless his party directed him to do so. Sharma seized on this, claiming that Abdullah's actions betray a sense of entitlement. "He talks about democracy but refuses to accept its basic tenets," Sharma added.
The exchange highlights the deepening rift between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir. While the NC has accused the BJP of undermining regional autonomy, the BJP has targeted Abdullah over his alleged reluctance to step down from office.
Reactions from Political Circles
Political analysts believe Sharma's comments are aimed at weakening Abdullah's credibility ahead of the upcoming local body elections. The NC, however, dismissed the allegations as baseless. Party spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said, "Omar Abdullah has always acted in the best interest of the people. Such personal attacks reflect the BJP's frustration."
The war of words is expected to intensify as both parties gear up for electoral battles in the region. Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah has not yet responded to Sharma's latest salvo.
