Opposition consolidation to expand BJP's space: Fadnavis

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that any consolidation among opposition parties would only serve to expand the Bharatiya Janata Party's political space. His remarks came in response to a claim by senior Maharashtra Congress leader Nana Patole that a proposal for the merger of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) with the Congress had already been discussed at the highest level.

Fadnavis dismisses merger speculation

Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis said, "Opposition consolidation is a natural phenomenon, but it will only help the BJP. The more they unite, the more our political space will grow." He added that the BJP's strong organizational structure and development agenda would continue to attract voters regardless of opposition alliances.

Patole's claim sparks debate

Earlier on Friday, Nana Patole told a news conference that the merger of the NCP (SP) with the Congress was a possibility that had been discussed at the highest levels of both parties. "We have talked about it. It is a proposal that has been considered by senior leaders," Patole said, without providing further details. The NCP (SP) is led by Sharad Pawar, who has historically maintained a separate identity from the Congress.

Political analysts view Patole's statement as an attempt to gauge public reaction ahead of the upcoming elections. However, the NCP (SP) has not officially commented on the matter.

Fadnavis, meanwhile, reiterated that the BJP was focused on governance and development. "We are not worried about opposition moves. Our work speaks for itself," he said.
