Opposition Parties Stage Walkout from BMC House Over Alleged Protocol Insult
In a dramatic turn of events at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) House on Monday, multiple opposition parties staged a coordinated walkout. The Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), and Samajwadi Party members left the proceedings in protest. Their grievance centered on what they described as the "insult" of opposition leader Kishori Pednekar of Shiv Sena (UBT).
Allegations of Disrespect in Mayor's Chamber
The controversy erupted during a scheduled meeting regarding the BMC's protocol department, which was to be held in Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde's chamber. According to opposition members, Pednekar was officially called for the meeting but was asked to wait in the Mayor's antechamber upon arrival. This action, they claimed, demonstrated a lack of respect for her position and time.
"We were called for a meeting by Mayor Ritu Tawde. After reaching on time, we were asked to wait in the antechamber, which we think was incorrect. This is no way of respecting someone's time," stated Pednekar, expressing her frustration at the perceived slight.
Broader Concerns About Civic Events
Congress party leader in the BMC, Ashraf Azmi, expanded on the issue by highlighting similar lapses at recent civic events. He pointed to the inauguration of the Sion hospital project and a cleanliness competition announcement attended by actor Akshay Kumar as examples. "All these events are being made out to be political party events instead of ensuring that every elected party in the BMC is made a part of it," Azmi remarked, suggesting a pattern of exclusion.
Azmi emphasized that the protocol department should ensure inclusive participation from all elected representatives, not just those from the ruling coalition.
Ruling Side's Defense and Explanation
The ruling side, comprising the BJP and Shiv Sena, offered a different perspective on the incident. They maintained that asking opposition members to wait in the antechamber was intended as a mark of respect, not an insult.
Shiv Sena's Yamini Jadhav explained, "We make only close people wait in the antechamber. So there's no need to make an issue of it." This statement implied that the request was a gesture of familiarity rather than disrespect.
Mayor Ritu Tawde provided further context, stating that she had informed Pednekar she would be coming to the antechamber shortly. "We were discussing some party issues and asked Pednekar to wait only for a few minutes. She went in but then left abruptly within a few minutes," Tawde told reporters. She added that the meeting's purpose was to instruct the civic protocol department to ensure all committee chairpersons are allowed at civic events and receive invites well in advance.
Internal Reactions and Aftermath
Shiv Sena's Amey Ghole, who was present in the Mayor's cabin during the incident, expressed surprise at the escalation. He said he had "respectfully" asked Pednekar to wait and did not anticipate it would become such a significant issue.
The walkout underscores ongoing tensions within the BMC, where protocol and representation in civic functions have become contentious points. The opposition's action highlights their demand for equal treatment and inclusion in municipal affairs, while the ruling side defends its actions as routine and respectful.
This incident may have implications for future collaborations and events organized by the BMC, as both sides navigate the delicate balance of political protocol and civic governance in Mumbai.
