OPS Seeks Fourth Consecutive Term in Bodinayakkanur Under DMK Banner
Southern Tamil Nadu is experiencing a political earthquake as former AIADMK stalwart and three-time chief minister O Panneerselvam, popularly known as OPS, aims for a fourth consecutive term from his stronghold of Bodinayakkanur. In a dramatic twist, he is contesting this time under the banner of the DMK, setting up a fierce confrontation with AIADMK candidate V T Narayanasamy.
Historic Stronghold and Shifting Loyalties
Bodinayakkanur has long been an AIADMK fortress, with the late chief minister J Jayalalithaa winning from here in the 1989 election. OPS, now 75 years old, achieved a hat-trick of victories in 2011, 2016, and 2021, solidifying his dominance. However, the 2024 election presents a radically different scenario. Panneerselvam's primary challenge is confronting the AIADMK's iconic 'two leaves' symbol in its own bastion, a struggle deeply intertwined with his ongoing feud with party general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami.
An AIADMK functionary commented, "Though many former OPS supporters remain within AIADMK, they are expected to stay loyal to the party and actively campaign for our candidate." This highlights the complex web of allegiances at play.
Past Electoral Battles and Strategic Moves
In the 2021 election, OPS defeated DMK's Thanga Tamil Selvan by a margin exceeding 11,000 votes. Thanga Tamil Selvan, originally from AIADMK, had shifted to AMMK after Jayalalithaa's death and later joined the DMK post the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Despite his base in Andipatti, he was strategically fielded by DMK in Bodinayakkanur to challenge OPS.
Subsequently, OPS contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Ramanathapuram as an independent, allied with the NDA. Despite facing five dummy candidates aimed at thwarting his chances, he secured a strong second place with 3.42 lakh votes, demonstrating his enduring appeal.
Caste Arithmetic and Community Dynamics
The Bodinayakkanur constituency is a mosaic of communities, including mukkulathor, nadar, pillai, chettiyar, and naidu, alongside Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The interplay of AIADMK and DMK vote banks, coupled with intricate caste calculations, is poised to be a decisive factor in determining the winner.
AIADMK sources express confidence in Narayanasamy, a naidu community member, emerging victorious. They anticipate that a majority of piramalai kallar votes will tilt towards AIADMK, bolstering their prospects.
Criticism and Campaign Challenges
OPS's party switch has drawn sharp criticism from AIADMK quarters. An AIADMK functionary remarked, "Had he joined DMK as an ordinary individual, it might have gone unnoticed. But how can the public respect him after serving three terms as chief minister under AIADMK?" This sentiment underscores the perceived betrayal felt by some supporters.
Additionally, OPS must navigate anti-incumbency sentiments. An AIADMK functionary noted, "We have initiated election work in the Periyakulam area but are yet to commence in Bodinayakkanur," indicating strategic pacing in their campaign.
DMK Support and Optimistic Projections
On the DMK side, V R Palaniraj, a staunch OPS supporter, asserts that there is no discontent among DMK cadres regarding OPS's induction. He highlighted that former DMK MLA S Lakshmanan, who won in 2006, relinquished his chance to contest again to support OPS, actively campaigning for him.
Palaniraj added, "The AIADMK candidate lacks the strength to challenge OPS, so he is likely to win by a wider margin. The DMK vote bank, combined with the government's achievements and election manifesto, will yield positive results." He further pointed out that the 20,000-strong maravar community votes, alongside traditional DMK support, will significantly benefit OPS.
Infrastructure and Development Focus
Shankar M, a DMK functionary from Bodinayakkanur, emphasized that OPS is being welcomed with immense enthusiasm. He cited key developmental projects such as improved water supply, underground drainage systems, paved village roads, and the establishment of government engineering, arts, and veterinary colleges in Theni district as factors bolstering OPS's position.
This election not only tests OPS's personal political resilience but also reflects broader shifts in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, where alliances and loyalties are constantly evolving.
