In the panchayat town of Palani Chettipatti in Theni district, the early morning tranquility is shattered by the rhythmic drumbeats and blaring DMK propaganda songs. Scores of men and women assemble along the main road, holding aloft posters featuring Chief Minister M K Stalin and his new party associate, O Panneerselvam, commonly known as OPS.
A Dramatic Political Realignment
For OPS, a three-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu, this represents a defiant and significant shift in party allegiance. This move came after ADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami repeatedly stonewalled his attempts to rejoin the party. Now contesting as the DMK candidate for the Bodinayakkanur constituency, OPS emerges from his car and carefully ascends a tempo van that has been repurposed into a campaign vehicle.
His three-vehicle convoy navigates through a paid yet enthusiastic crowd as he greets supporters with folded hands. Notably, the pocket that once held a photograph of J Jayalalithaa now contains a profile of Stalin. Similarly, the picture on his car dashboard has been replaced, symbolizing this profound political transformation.
Campaign Promises and Voter Reactions
"Stalin will return as chief minister. The Dravidian model of governance will be reinstated," OPS declares, eliciting applause and cheers from the gathering. He glances up at the dangerously dangling electric cables overhead and promises to have them properly reinstalled.
A party worker cries out, "Raise your hands if you will vote for OPS!" Most attendees comply with the instruction, and Panneerselvam appears pleased with the response. Among them is Visithra, a 27-year-old local resident, who lifts both her hand and her toddler's. "TVK has not campaigned here yet," she remarks. "However, I am uncertain whether my family, which has always voted for ADMK, will now support DMK."
Challenges in a Traditional Stronghold
Panneerselvam has secured easy victories in Bodinayakkanur three times previously as an ADMK candidate. Nevertheless, this election may not be a straightforward contest. He faces a formidable opponent in ADMK candidate V T Narayanaswamy. Additionally, OPS's rivals are accusing him of betraying 'Amma' (J Jayalalithaa), leveraging this emotional charge against him.
