Rohit Monserrate Secures Sixth Consecutive Term as Panaji Mayor Unopposed

In a significant development for Goa's capital city, Rohit Monserrate has been elected unopposed as the Mayor of Panaji for an unprecedented sixth consecutive term. The election process, conducted by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP), saw no other candidates applying for the prestigious position, leading to Monserrate's automatic declaration as the duly elected mayor.

Deputy Mayor Also Elected Without Contest

Similarly, Vasant Agshikar was elected unopposed to the post of Deputy Mayor, marking a smooth transition of leadership within the municipal corporation. CCP commissioner Clen Madeira officially announced the results, stating, "No other candidate applied for the mayor's post. Since there is no other candidate in the fray, I declare Rohit Monserrate as the duly elected mayor, unopposed, of Panaji."

Immediate Focus on Traffic and Parking Issues

Outlining his ambitious agenda for the capital city, Mayor Monserrate emphasized that tackling traffic congestion and haphazard parking would be his administration's top priority. "We have already met with officials concerned. We met the traffic deputy superintendent of police. Over the course of the next six months, we want to begin the process of streamlining the entire situation," he declared.

The mayor revealed that initial efforts would concentrate on the area surrounding casinos, where traffic and parking problems are particularly acute. "First, we want to start with the area around the casinos. We have asked police for recommendations on what can be done. There is a lot of work that needs to be done from the CCP's side also," Monserrate explained.

Specific measures under consideration include:

  • Installation of pay-parking boards to regulate vehicle parking
  • Strategic placement of bollards to prevent parking on pavements
  • Comprehensive traffic management systems
  • Enhanced coordination with police authorities

Preparations for 2027 Assembly Elections

Mayor Monserrate acknowledged that significant work remains to be accomplished in Panaji before the crucial 2027 assembly elections. His administration appears determined to implement visible improvements in urban infrastructure and public services that could influence the political landscape in coming years.

Stance on Gas Pipeline Installation

In a notable policy decision, the mayor announced that CCP would not grant permission to Goa Natural Gas Pvt Ltd for laying gas pipelines within city limits. "We are not in favour of them breaking our newly tarred or concrete roads. It took us a lot of time and effort to get those things put into place," Monserrate stated firmly.

The mayor elaborated on this position, adding, "We will sit with them and see. We are not going to allow anything before monsoon. The priority of our citizens is paramount. If our people are going to feel any discomfort, then we are not going to allow it. They can extend their timeline by a little bit."

This decision reflects the administration's commitment to preserving recently completed infrastructure projects and minimizing disruption to residents' daily lives. The mayor's stance suggests a careful balancing act between urban development needs and quality-of-life considerations for Panaji's citizens.
