Tamil Nadu Pastoral Community Celebrates Historic Inclusion in DMK Election Manifesto
The Tamil Nadu Federation for Pastoral People's Sangam (TFPPS) has expressed strong approval and optimism following the inclusion of pastoral community provisions in the DMK's election manifesto. This landmark development represents the first time the term 'pastoral community' has appeared in any political party's election document within the state, signaling a significant shift in political recognition.
First-Ever Manifesto Mention After Sustained Advocacy
TFPPS President Rajiv Gandhi emphasized that this inclusion resulted from persistent efforts by the community and the federation over many years. The DMK manifesto specifically promises forest rights for traditional pastoral community members, addressing a long-standing concern that TFPPS has consistently highlighted in discussions with political representatives.
"This gives us genuine hope for securing more substantial benefits and protections in the coming years," stated Gandhi, noting that pastoral communities have historically been overlooked in policy discussions despite their cultural significance.
Cultural Heritage and Traditional Practices Recognized
Gandhi elaborated on the community's importance, describing pastoralists as integral to Tamil Nadu's cultural and traditional heritage. These communities maintain centuries-old grazing methods and follow traditional migratory routes that have been passed down through generations, contributing to ecological balance through their sustainable practices.
The TFPPS president explained that pastoralists employ safe, natural grazing techniques that align with environmental conservation principles, making their recognition not just a social justice issue but an ecological imperative as well.
Specific Demands for Community Development
Beyond the manifesto inclusion, TFPPS has presented concrete proposals to ensure meaningful progress for pastoral communities:
- Establishment of a dedicated Pastoral Economic Developmental Board to oversee community-specific initiatives
- Implementation of targeted benefits for migratory pastoralists to support their unique lifestyle and economic activities
- Formal recognition of traditional grazing rights and routes within forest areas
These measures, according to Gandhi, would substantially enhance the community's socioeconomic growth while preserving their traditional way of life. The federation had previously emphasized these points during consultations with DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and members of the party's manifesto committee.
The manifesto commitment represents a crucial first step toward addressing the pastoral community's longstanding concerns about land rights, economic opportunities, and cultural preservation in Tamil Nadu.
