Patna's Urban Local Bodies Achieve Record Revenue Collection in Fiscal Year 2025-26
Urban local bodies across the state have achieved a significant financial milestone by collecting more than Rs 908 crore in revenue during the last fiscal year, 2025-26. This impressive figure includes substantial collections from holding tax, marking a notable improvement in the financial health and administrative management of urban governance.
Deputy CM Highlights Financial Strengthening and Management Improvements
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for the Urban Development and Housing Department, Vijay Kumar Sinha, emphasized that this achievement reflects the strengthened financial position and enhanced management capabilities of the state's urban administration. He detailed that the revenue was gathered from a comprehensive network of 19 municipal corporations, 89 municipal councils, and 156 nagar panchayats, showcasing widespread efficiency.
Notably, the recovery of holding tax alone surpassed Rs 565 crore against a set target of Rs 533 crore, achieving an impressive 106% of the goal. This performance stands in stark contrast to the previous financial year, 2024-25, when total revenue collection, including holding tax, was Rs 432 crore, with only Rs 290 crore collected specifically as holding tax. The data indicates a substantial year-on-year increase in both overall revenue and holding tax recovery, highlighting a positive trend in fiscal management.
Government Initiatives Drive Transparency and Digital Efficiency
Sinha attributed this success to the government's continuous efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and digital processes within urban local bodies. He explained that several key initiatives have been implemented to streamline operations and boost public participation.
- Introduction of online payment systems to facilitate easier tax payments.
- Ensuring timely tax assessment to maintain accuracy and fairness.
- Conducting regular monitoring to track progress and address issues promptly.
These measures have made the collection process simpler and more effective, encouraging greater compliance from citizens. The deputy CM stressed that financial self-reliance of urban local bodies is crucial for the holistic development of cities, enabling them to fund essential projects independently.
Enhanced Revenue to Fuel Urban Infrastructure and Civic Services
The increased revenue collection is expected to play a vital role in developing urban infrastructure and improving the quality of life for residents. Sinha outlined several key areas where the funds will be allocated:
- Improving sanitation systems to ensure cleaner and healthier urban environments.
- Ensuring reliable water supply to meet the growing demands of the population.
- Constructing better roads to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion.
- Expanding other essential civic services, such as waste management and public amenities.
He also expressed appreciation for the dedication of all elected representatives and employees of the urban local bodies, encouraging them to maintain their commitment and efficiency to further strengthen revenue collection in the future. Additionally, Sinha appealed to citizens to pay their taxes on time, emphasizing that timely payments are essential for providing improved and efficient urban services across the state.
Confidence in Future Growth and Setting New Standards
Expressing confidence in the ongoing efforts, the minister stated that in the coming years, urban local bodies are poised to set new benchmarks in revenue collection. This optimism is based on the successful implementation of digital reforms and the collaborative efforts of government officials and the public. The achievement not only underscores the current financial robustness but also sets a foundation for sustainable urban development, ensuring that cities can thrive and meet the evolving needs of their inhabitants through enhanced fiscal management and community engagement.
