Patna Valentine's Day Warning: Hindu Shivbhawani Sena Posters Threaten Couples
With only two days left until Valentine's Day, warning posters have emerged at multiple locations across Patna, sparking concerns and controversy. Issued by the Hindu Shivbhawani Sena, these posters prominently feature the slogan, "Jahan milenge babu-sona, tod denge kona-kona", which translates to a direct threat indicating that couples discovered together will face severe consequences, including potential physical assault.
Cultural Objections and Allegations
The group has strongly condemned Valentine's Day celebrations, labeling them as contrary to Hindu and Indian cultural values. They allege that the occasion promotes obscenity, nudity, religious conversion, and what they refer to as "love jihad". The organisation objects to the entire period leading up to February 14, from Chocolate Day onwards, claiming it erodes traditional Indian morals and societal norms.
Vigilante Patrols and Forceful Interventions
The posters explicitly warn that members of the outfit will conduct patrols in public spaces such as parks and restaurants, keeping a close watch on couples. If any behaviour deemed "obscene" is observed, volunteers are instructed to intervene forcibly, using sticks and rods to "teach a lesson" to those involved. This aggressive stance has raised alarms about potential violence and harassment.
Call to Honour Martyrs Instead
In addition to the threats, the posters urge people to dedicate Valentine's Day to honouring martyrs. They mention that the Pulwama terror attack occurred on this date, suggesting it should be observed as a tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives, rather than as a celebration of love.
Statements from Leaders and Authorities
Luv Kumar Singh, national president of the Hindu Shivbhawani Sena, emphasized in a video message: "Love is a sacred feeling, but if anyone is seen engaging in obscene acts in public places under the pretext of love, using showy names like 'babu-sona', then our strict vigil will remain on them. Under the influence of Western culture, some people behave indecently in public places, polluting the social environment. We demand that the administration ensure strict action in such cases." He further warned that if people are found indulging in obscene activities on February 14, the organisation will respond with force and take strict action.
In response, Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma assured that strict action would be taken against anyone disrupting law and order or creating a public nuisance, including instances of harassment or violence. He stated: "We deployed additional security personnel and guards in key locations to prevent any untoward incidents, obscenity and ensure a peaceful environment. Major areas across Patna are fully covered under these arrangements." This highlights the administration's efforts to maintain peace and security during the upcoming celebrations.
