The political landscape in Kerala is set for a dramatic shift as outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan prepares to take on the role of Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. This move reignites his long-standing political rivalry with the incoming Chief Minister, V D Satheesan.
CPM State Committee Decision
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) state committee convened on Thursday and decided that Vijayan would assume the position of opposition leader. This decision put an end to speculations that he might step aside to make way for younger party leaders. The meeting, presided over by K Radhakrishnan, was attended by CPM general secretary M A Baby, Vijayan, and senior leader A Vijayaraghavan.
Political Context
The Left Democratic Front (LDF), which Vijayan led for a decade, currently holds only 35 of the 140 seats in the assembly. In contrast, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is set to form the government after securing a landslide victory with 102 seats. Satheesan and Vijayan have a history of intense confrontations, both inside and outside the assembly, particularly when Satheesan served as opposition leader during the previous LDF government.
Implications for the Assembly
Vijayan will now head the opposition benches after being in power for 10 years. There were earlier rumors that he might not take up the post, with former finance minister K N Balagopal being considered for the role. However, the state committee elected Vijayan as the CPM legislative party leader, solidifying his new position. Political observers anticipate that the sharp exchanges and ideological battles between Vijayan and Satheesan will continue, albeit from opposite sides of the House.
