Prayagraj Cold Storage Collapse Claims Four Lives, Injures Twelve Including Minor
A tragic structural failure at a cold storage facility in Prayagraj's Phaphamau area on Monday afternoon resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left twelve others injured, among them a minor child. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM when a section of the aging building gave way, trapping sixteen people under heavy debris.
Rescue Efforts and Official Response
Immediate rescue operations were launched by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the local fire department. Authorities deployed at least five earthmovers to clear the rubble and extract the trapped victims. The injured were promptly transported to Beli Hospital and SRN Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Senior officials, including Prayagraj District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, Police Commissioner Jogender Kumar, DIG (Law & Order) Ajay Pal Sharma, and DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh, rushed to the site to oversee the emergency response. Rescue work continued into the evening as efforts to ensure no one remained trapped were prioritized.
Compensation and Investigation Announced
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed profound grief over the catastrophe and announced substantial financial assistance for the affected families. Both leaders have pledged an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased victim. Additionally, each injured person will receive Rs 50,000 in financial aid from the government.
A three-member investigative committee has been constituted, headed by the Additional District Magistrate (Finance), to determine the precise causes of the collapse. This committee is mandated to submit its detailed report within a strict timeframe of two days. The probe will scrutinize safety protocols, structural integrity, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Background and Potential Causes
The cold storage facility, reportedly over twenty-five years old, is owned by former Samajwadi Party MLA Ansar Ahmed. Constructed on a 1,500 square meter plot, it has a storage capacity of approximately 1.25 lakh sacks. Local residents described hearing a massive sound as the structure collapsed, prompting immediate panic and calls for help.
While unconfirmed reports suggested a possible ammonia leakage as the trigger for the incident, officials have not yet verified this claim. Police are actively investigating the status of the facility's operating license, including whether it was properly issued and renewed. As a precautionary measure, traffic from Lucknow and Pratapgarh was diverted via Gohri turn and Shantipuram to ensure safety and facilitate rescue access.
Concerns Over Safety and Accountability
Families of the victims and eyewitnesses have raised serious concerns about the lack of adequate safety arrangements for workers at the site. Many of the injured were daily wage laborers employed at the cold storage. Some locals speculated that overloading of the structure may have contributed to its sudden failure, though this remains under investigation.
In a post on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi stated, "Deeply saddened by the mishap due to the collapse of a building in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families in this difficult hour. May those injured recover at the earliest." Similarly, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences, writing, "The loss of life resulting from the accident at the cold storage facility in the Prayagraj district is deeply tragic and heart-wrenching. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families."
The incident underscores urgent questions about building safety regulations and enforcement in industrial structures, particularly older facilities. Authorities have assured a thorough investigation to prevent such tragedies in the future.
