Prayagraj Cold Storage Collapse Claims Four Lives, Injures Twelve Including Minor
A tragic incident unfolded in Prayagraj on Monday afternoon when a portion of a cold storage facility collapsed in the Phaphamau area, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals and injuries to twelve others, including a minor. The collapse occurred around 1:30 PM, trapping sixteen people under the debris, as confirmed by District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma.
Rescue Efforts and Immediate Response
Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the fire department working tirelessly to extricate the trapped persons. At least five earthmovers were deployed to aid in the rescue efforts, which continued until late in the evening. The injured were promptly admitted to Beli and SRN hospitals, where they are receiving medical treatment.
Senior officials, including Police Commissioner Jogender Kumar, DIG (Law & Order) Ajay Pal Sharma, and DCP (Ganga Nagar) Kuldeep Singh, rushed to the site to oversee the operations. As a precautionary measure, traffic from Lucknow and Pratapgarh was diverted through Gohri turn and Shantipuram towards Prayagraj to ensure safety and facilitate rescue work.
Compensation and Political Reactions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed profound grief over the incident. Both leaders announced financial assistance, with Rs 2 lakh to be provided to the families of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to each injured individual. In a post on X, PM Modi stated, "Deeply saddened by the mishap due to the collapse of a building in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families in this difficult hour. May those injured recover at the earliest." CM Yogi echoed similar sentiments, calling the loss of life "deeply tragic and heart-wrenching" and extending condolences to the bereaved families.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
A three-member committee, headed by the Additional District Magistrate (Finance), has been constituted to probe the incident and is expected to submit its report within two days. Preliminary reports suggest that the cold storage, which is over 25 years old and belongs to former Samajwadi Party MLA Ansar Ahmed, may have lacked adequate safety arrangements. The facility, built on a 1,500 square metre area with a capacity to store approximately 1.25 lakh sacks, is under scrutiny for potential overloading and license renewal issues.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that an ammonia leakage might have triggered the collapse, although official confirmation is pending. Families of the victims have raised concerns about the absence of proper safety measures for workers, many of whom were daily wagers employed at the site. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the license issuance and renewal of the cold storage.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This incident highlights critical issues related to building safety and regulatory compliance in industrial facilities across Uttar Pradesh. The collapse has not only caused loss of life and injuries but also disrupted local traffic and raised questions about the enforcement of safety standards in older structures. As the investigation progresses, authorities are urged to implement stricter measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The community in Prayagraj remains in shock, with locals recalling the loud sound of the collapse and expressing solidarity with the affected families. The government's prompt response in providing compensation and initiating a probe is seen as a step towards accountability, but calls for enhanced safety protocols and regular inspections of such facilities are growing louder.
