A tragic incident unfolded in Bhilwara district, where a 33-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband on suspicion of adultery late Thursday night. The police reported that the 34-year-old husband, who forcibly administered abortion pills to his wife during the assault, was detained on Friday and formally arrested on Saturday.
Details of the Incident
The husband, identified as Gopi Yadav, suspected his wife, Roli Devi, of having an extra-marital affair. He brutally assaulted her late Thursday night at their home under Hamirgarh police station. The assault resulted in a miscarriage and severe blood loss. Neighbors, alerted by her screams, rushed her to the district hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Police Investigation
Hamirgarh police station in-charge Sunil Kumar Beda stated, "Based on a statement by the deceased's daughter, we registered a case of murder against accused Gopi Yadav and formed separate teams to locate him." Yadav, a factory laborer originally from Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, was residing at BSL Colony in Bhilwara. The couple had four children—two sons and two daughters.
Daughter's Account
Police revealed that the couple's 14-year-old daughter told investigators that her father began assaulting her mother on Thursday morning, and the beatings continued intermittently throughout the day. She further alleged that her father went to the market, purchased abortion pills, and forcibly administered them to her mother when she refused to take them. Preliminary investigation suggests the killing was linked to the husband's suspicion of infidelity and a resulting dispute over the pregnancy.
Medical Examination
An official from the medical team that conducted the post-mortem described the injuries as severe. Medical jurist Dr. Chetan Kumar said, "The condition of the body was shocking. Though there were no fractures, multiple injuries clearly pointed to sustained violence. There were also signs of an attempted forced abortion." Doctors at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital reported that the woman was brought in critical condition with heavy blood loss and could not be saved.
Legal Proceedings
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Harjeeram confirmed that the accused was produced before a court on Saturday and remanded in police custody for three days. The investigation is ongoing.
