Premallatha Vijayakanth Files Nomination in Vridhachalam, Pledges to Uphold Legacy
In a significant political move, DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakanth officially filed her nomination papers on Monday to contest from the Vridhachalam assembly constituency in Cuddalore district. She declared that history is set to repeat itself after two decades, drawing parallels to the electoral success of her late husband, DMDK founder Vijayakanth, known as 'Captain'.
Emotional and Historical Significance of Vridhachalam
Premallatha emphasized the deep emotional connection the party holds with Vridhachalam, as it was the seat where Vijayakanth made his spectacular electoral debut in 2006. She stated, "History is repeating itself after 20 years. Just as 'Captain' won in 2006 and made this a model constituency, I will work tirelessly to ensure Vridhachalam becomes the best constituency in the state." She invoked divine blessings, mentioning Lord Viruthagireeswarar, Lord Kolanjiappar, and the late chief minister M Karunanidhi, along with Vijayakanth's spiritual guidance.
Campaign Priorities and Alliance with DMK
As a candidate of the Secular Progressive Alliance, Premallatha outlined her key campaign promise: to advocate for declaring Vridhachalam as a separate district. She pledged to urge DMK president M K Stalin, whom she referred to as the "soon-to-be chief minister for a second term," to fulfill this long-standing local demand upon her victory. She asserted, "Vridhachalam is not just a constituency; it is etched in our breath and hearts. I will fulfil all the unfinished tasks 'Captain' left behind for this soil."
Premallatha highlighted the significance of the DMDK-DMK alliance, describing it as a union that many had desired for years. She remarked, "The alliance between DMDK and DMK should have happened when 'Captain' and 'Kalaignar' (Karunanidhi) were with us. Though delayed, it has finally happened now. This is the alliance the people want and celebrate." She expressed confidence in a "magnificent victory" for the coalition, citing positive public response.
Rigorous Campaign Schedule and Statewide Efforts
Premallatha detailed a rigorous 10-day campaign plan centered in Vridhachalam. She will spend the initial three days in the constituency before traveling to support alliance candidates across Tamil Nadu. From April 18 to 21, she plans an intensive door-to-door campaign in Vridhachalam to connect directly with voters. She extended her best wishes to all Secular Progressive Alliance candidates filing nominations, emphasizing a united front for electoral success.
This nomination marks a pivotal moment in Tamil Nadu politics, as Premallatha seeks to carry forward the DMDK's legacy while aligning with the DMK to address local and state-level issues.
