Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has called for greater transparency from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), while firmly denying any intention to ban the organization. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kharge emphasized his readiness to visit RSS offices with his advocates if required, or to host their representatives with legal counsel present.
Kharge's Stance on RSS
Kharge, a prominent Congress leader and son of former Chief Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, stated that his demand for transparency stems from a need for accountability. He clarified that the Congress government in Karnataka has no plans to impose a ban on the RSS, contrary to speculation in some quarters.
“I am not seeking a ban on the RSS. What I am asking for is transparency. The RSS should be open about its activities and funding. If they have nothing to hide, they should have no objection to this,” Kharge said.
Offer for Dialogue
The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj offered to engage directly with the RSS leadership. “I am willing to go to their office with my lawyers, or they can come to me with theirs. We can discuss their operations and assure them that there is no threat of a ban,” he added.
Kharge’s comments come amid ongoing political tensions between the Congress government and the RSS, which is ideologically aligned with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The RSS has often criticized the Congress government’s policies, while Congress leaders have accused the RSS of undermining secular institutions.
Political Reactions
The BJP has seized on Kharge’s earlier remarks, alleging that the Congress government is targeting the RSS. However, Kharge’s latest clarification appears to be an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Political analysts view this as a strategic move to avoid a confrontation that could polarize voters ahead of upcoming elections.
Kharge reiterated that his focus is on ensuring that all organizations, including the RSS, operate within the legal framework. “Transparency is not a threat; it is a cornerstone of democracy. We expect the same from every organization,” he concluded.
