A tragic road accident in Idukki district claimed the life of a college professor and left his son critically injured on Monday morning. The incident occurred at Venmani near Vannappuram in Thodupuzha when the scooter they were riding collided with a car.
Victim Identified
The deceased has been identified as Bijoy Thomas, 53, a professor in the chemistry department of Newman College. He was a resident of Karinkunnam. His son, George Thomas, 12, who was traveling with him, sustained severe injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Accident Details
The collision took place around 7:15 am at Koodathotty Junction on the Vannappuram–Chelachuvadu road. Thomas and his son were returning from their ancestral home at Thekkumthandu near Murickassery when their scooter collided with a car coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that both riders were thrown onto the road, while the car crashed into the roadside protection wall.
Bus employees who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident carried out the rescue operation. They shifted the injured duo to a private hospital in Thodupuzha. However, Thomas could not be saved. George suffered serious injuries to his hand, head, and lungs, according to hospital sources.
Family Background
Thomas is survived by his wife Jino, a teacher at Govt Vocational Higher Secondary School, Pala, and their daughter Arna Nesa Thomas. The family is in shock over the sudden tragedy.
The local police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the accident.
