Pune Municipal Corporation Imposes Heavy Penalty for Riverbed Dumping
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday took stringent action against environmental violations by imposing a substantial fine of Rs 10 lakh on a private developer. The penalty was levied for allegedly dumping trash and construction debris on the riverbed near Deccan, an act that has raised serious environmental concerns.
Immediate Actions and Official Statements
A senior PMC official confirmed that the civic administration has issued directives to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority to take further action in this matter. "A stop-work order should be issued for the construction project from which the debris was collected. The site from which the rubble was lifted has been sealed," the official stated.
Avinash Sakpal, head of PMC's solid waste management department, emphasized the seriousness of the violation. "We will file criminal offences against people responsible for this dumping. Monitoring will be intensified to prevent such incidents in the future," Sakpal declared.

PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram revealed that the administration is drafting a comprehensive policy for better management of construction and demolition debris. "A standard operating procedure will be formed to ensure systematic handling of such waste," Ram explained.
The municipal corporation is planning to establish 10 dedicated centers across civic areas for proper waste disposal. These facilities will be guarded and secured with dedicated manpower to ensure that citizens living in nearby areas are not affected. A letter issued by the mayor's office highlighted the gravity of the situation: "Incidents of illegal dumping of debris, construction waste, and garbage were observed in the riverbeds of Pune city. This is an extremely serious matter, as it risks obstructing natural flow of river, creating flood-like situations, and causing large-scale environmental damage."
The mayor's letter also questioned the effectiveness of existing monitoring mechanisms: "What is the 24-hour flying squad—which was appointed to prevent such dumping—currently doing? Responsibility must be fixed on the concerned health inspectors and construction inspectors of the areas where the debris was dumped."
