A heated confrontation disrupted the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) general body meeting on Wednesday when an NCP (SP) corporator attempted to discuss the removal of a religious structure. The incident occurred amidst discussions on the city's water crisis, with the corporator raising the alleged removal of a structure in Bopodi. BJP corporators objected strongly, trying to prevent him from speaking, sparking verbal clashes between the two factions. The meeting was abruptly adjourned before the situation escalated further.
Opposition Condemns BJP Corporators
Following the adjournment, opposition leaders strongly criticized the BJP corporators' behavior. Leader of Opposition Nilesh Nikam, Congress member Arvind Shinde, and NCP (SP) politician Kaka Chavan stated that there was no justification for stifling the corporator's right to speak. Nikam remarked, "Such behavior is completely unacceptable. There was no need for BJP corporators to leave their seats and confront NCP (SP) members. Elected representatives must be allowed to express their views." Shinde echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of democratic discourse.
Opposition Plans Protest
The opposition announced plans to stage a protest at PMC ahead of the next general body meeting scheduled for the coming week. They aim to condemn the BJP corporators' actions and demand accountability. The incident has heightened political tensions in Pune, with the opposition accusing the ruling party of suppressing dissent.
