Pune Residents Stage Weekend Protests Over Road Safety and Water Crisis
Residents in the Pune neighborhoods of Mohammedwadi, Undri, and Pisoli escalated their demonstrations over the weekend, voicing strong opposition to systemic neglect of road safety and infrastructure. This surge in civic action comes in response to several recent accidents involving heavy vehicles, highlighting growing public frustration with local authorities.
Silent Protest and Rally Against "Tanker Raj"
On Sunday evening, a silent protest was organized at the top of Pinnacle Ridge Road, where community members stood holding placards denouncing unsafe infrastructure and opposing the proposed Development Plan (DP) road in the area. The demonstration aimed to draw attention to hazardous conditions that residents argue are exacerbated by thoughtless construction.
Parveen Tambe, co-founder of the NIBM-Undri Residents Forum, explained the motivation behind the peaceful protest, which commenced at 5:30 PM. "We are doing this to get some response from PMC as our demands are consistently ignored," Tambe stated. "We are standing against the DP road. It is hazardous and does not follow the law. Roads being built or repaired should follow rules and regulations set by the government, not just thoughtless construction in the name of development. Public safety must be the first priority."
Earlier on Saturday, hundreds gathered in Mohammedwadi to rally against what they termed the "growing tanker raj" and worsening water shortages in these rapidly expanding areas. The protests underscore a dual crisis of inadequate infrastructure and essential service failures.
PMC Response and Technical Assessments
In response to the outcry, PMC road department head Rajesh Bankar confirmed that work on the proposed DP road has been temporarily halted. "Future course of action will be taken after technical assessment and discussions with stakeholders," Bankar assured, indicating a potential reevaluation of the project amid public pressure.
Resident Testimonies Highlight Daily Struggles
Local residents provided vivid accounts of the challenges posed by existing road conditions. Manasi Damley, living along Good Shepherd Lane, described the steep incline and bottleneck at the junction connecting Pinnacle Ridge approach road to NIBM Chowk as making daily movement perilous. "PMC should first consider the issues residents are already facing here. The road incline is not recommended for public use. Authorities should survey the area, understand the problems, and address bottlenecks," Damley urged.
Sukbir Singh Sanghavi, chairman of a society in the area, pointed to the compounding risks of terrain and increased traffic. "Traffic on NIBM-Undri Road has already increased, and cannot handle more. The slope is very steep, and vehicles come at speed. With another sloping road meeting it, the likelihood of accidents is high," Sanghavi warned, emphasizing the urgent need for traffic management and road safety measures.
Eroding Trust and Safety Concerns
The protests reflect a deeper erosion of trust in local authorities, fueled by repeated fatalities and poor enforcement. Nisha Monteiro, a resident of NIBM Road, expressed the pervasive fear among parents and commuters. "Protests like this are needed because our concerns always go unheard. This is not the first time fatalities have happened due to rash tanker driving or poor road conditions, and it may not be the last. As a parent, it is scary. Leaving home and coming back safely feels uncertain," Monteiro shared, highlighting the emotional toll of the ongoing neglect.
Jaideep Malaviya, another local resident, added a touch of dark humor to the serious issue, quipping, "DP will only increase our BP (blood pressure), not reduce any traffic issues," capturing the community's frustration with proposed solutions that seem to exacerbate problems rather than solve them.
Calls for Stricter Regulations and Infrastructure Improvements
Protima Bhaskar, a resident of Undri, recounted personal experiences with accidents due to loose rubble and steep gradients, stressing the need for stronger roads and stricter regulation of tanker movement. "Due to poor road conditions and steep gradients, I have had several accidents where my scooter has skidded. It is scary how something like this has become normal for us. While many societies depend on water tankers, there must be stricter regulation for drivers and stronger roads that can handle such heavy vehicles," Bhaskar asserted, calling for comprehensive reforms to ensure public safety.
The weekend protests in Pune have amplified residents' demands for immediate action from the Pune Municipal Corporation, focusing on road safety enhancements, infrastructure audits, and addressing water shortages. As technical assessments proceed, the community remains vigilant, hoping for tangible improvements to restore trust and safety in their neighborhoods.
