Pune's Vishrantwadi Junction Braces for Traffic Diversions as Flyover Work Accelerates
The civic administration in Pune is grappling with the formidable challenge of meeting commuters' expectations by completing a critical grade separator and flyover project at Vishrantwadi junction within a tight two-month deadline before the monsoon season arrives. This urgent timeline has prompted authorities to implement significant traffic management measures to facilitate the remaining construction work.
Traffic Diversions Planned to Expedite Construction
Hundreds of road users have already been enduring considerable chaos due to existing barricading at the junction, with many demanding improvements before the monsoon exacerbates conditions. However, commuters' troubles are set to intensify soon as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and traffic police are finalizing plans to introduce comprehensive traffic diversions. These measures aim to assist work on the remaining stretch of the project, which has progressed to the main junction area.
Sources within PMC revealed that the advancement of construction to this pivotal point makes traffic diversions inevitable to keep carriageways clear and support ongoing activities. The civic administration has formally approached the traffic police department to collaborate on developing effective diversion strategies. Officials emphasized that completing the work before the monsoon is contingent upon allowing these diversions and temporary road closures in the coming days.
Project Progress and Challenges
An official from PMC provided insights into the current status, stating, "The work has been progressing at a limited pace because of existing restrictions. It could have been expedited if we had access to more space, but closing the entire chowk for vehicles presented significant difficulties. Approximately 68% of the grade separator and flyover work has been finished, but crucial tasks in the junction area remain pending."
The PMC is looking to the traffic police to devise a plan similar to the diversions implemented at University Chowk during recent flyover construction there. Local corporators from the area have indicated that a joint meeting will be held in the next few days to achieve a breakthrough and prioritize completion of the work at the chowk.
Commuters' Concerns and Local Impact
Local commuters are urging authorities to meticulously plan traffic diversions before halting vehicular movement at the main chowk. Atul Sathe, a local vendor, highlighted the junction's importance, noting that vehicles from various directions—including Alandi, Phugewadi RTO, Tingrenagar, and Dhanori—converge at Vishrantwadi chowk and have been facing severe hardships due to the ongoing construction. Sathe advocated for weekly reviews of work progress to ensure timely completion and minimize disruption.
The situation underscores the delicate balance between infrastructure development and public convenience, with authorities racing against time to deliver the project before monsoon rains potentially delay progress further.
