Punjab Chief Minister Flags Off 250 New PRTC Buses in Patiala
In a significant move to enhance public transportation, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday flagged off 250 new buses for the Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC) in Patiala. He described this initiative as a major step toward strengthening public transport, generating employment opportunities, and accelerating development across the state.
Expanding the Fleet for Better Connectivity
Addressing the event, CM Mann emphasized that the addition of these buses is not merely an improvement in transport facilities but a crucial effort to provide safer, more comfortable, and efficient travel for the people of Punjab. "Today in Patiala, 250 new buses were flagged off and added to the PRTC fleet. This is a significant step towards better public transport and creating new jobs for our youth," he stated.
Looking ahead, Mann announced ambitious plans for further expansion. "In the coming days, more than 300 additional buses will be inducted into the PRTC fleet. The government is consistently working to enhance public convenience and propel Punjab on the path of progress," he added. By the end of May 2026, the fleet is set to grow with 254 ordinary buses and 100 mini buses, reflecting a substantial upgrade in transportation infrastructure.
Boosting Employment and Economic Growth
The CM highlighted the employment potential of this expansion, noting that it will create jobs for 681 individuals. He provided context by mentioning that in 2024, around 110 ordinary buses were added, employing 165 persons. Furthermore, tenders have been floated for 309 more buses, which are expected to generate employment for an additional 928 people, underscoring the government's focus on job creation.
On the financial front, Mann revealed impressive growth for the PRTC. The corporation registered a 53% increase in gross revenue, rising from Rs 607.09 crore in the financial year 2021-22 to Rs 927.83 crore in 2024-25. "In FY 2025-26, the PRTC is projected to cross Rs 950 crore in gross revenue, reflecting nearly 57% growth," he said, indicating robust economic performance.
Welfare Initiatives and Future Plans
Mann also outlined key welfare measures implemented by the PRTC. Since 2022, the corporation has provided free travel facilities to 34.63 crore women commuters in Punjab, amounting to Rs 1,574 crore. Additionally, under the Mukh Mantri Tirath Yatra scheme, PRTC has offered free HVAC bus travel worth Rs 2.21 crore, enabling 9,529 passengers to visit religious sites within and outside the state.
"With the expansion of the bus fleet, people in both urban and rural areas will enjoy safer and more comfortable travel. Punjab is advancing on the development path, and we are accelerating efforts to bridge existing gaps," Mann asserted.
PRTC Chairman Harpal Juneja added that apart from installing rooftop solar systems at all bus stands, new bus stands are being constructed with improved shelter arrangements to prevent passenger inconvenience, ensuring a better travel experience overall.
