Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Demands Social Boycott of Akali Dal Leaders Over Sacrilege Incidents
In a fiery address in Patiala, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday called for a widespread social boycott of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, including former deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. Mann held them directly responsible for sacrilege incidents and alleged atrocities that occurred during their tenure in power.
Mann Accuses SAD Leaders of Desecration and Betrayal
Addressing a public gathering, Mann stated, "These people bruised the psyche of every common man by allowing the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji during their regime. These traitors can never be forgiven as they are responsible for desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and their hands were drenched with the blood of innocent masses." He appealed to the people to isolate SAD leaders socially, emphasizing their role in what he described as a dark period for Punjab.
Mann recalled specific incidents, including the Bargari sacrilege and the Behbal Kalan police firing, where protesters were killed. He pointed out that Sukhbir Badal, who served as home minister at the time, must provide answers for these events. The chief minister urged citizens not to support such leaders, warning that backing them would equate to endorsing an era marked by sacrilege, violence against protestors, and widespread atrocities on the common man.
Allegations of Power Theft and Political Opportunism
Beyond the sacrilege issue, Mann sharpened his attack on the Akali leadership by accusing them of power theft. He announced that the state government would lodge a formal case regarding this matter. Mann alleged that the party continues to exploit public resources even while out of power, maintaining a mindset of entitlement and corruption.
He also criticized the Akali Dal's ongoing "Punjab Bachao Yatra" (Save Punjab March), labeling it a "Parivar Bachao Yatra" (Save Family March). Mann claimed that the party is primarily focused on protecting its own political interests and family legacy rather than genuinely addressing the state's challenges.
Contrast with Previous Governments and Focus on Education
Mann further accused previous governments led by both the SAD and the Congress of severely damaging Punjab's economy, social fabric, and institutions. He asserted that under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, the state is now gradually moving back on track toward recovery and progress.
Emphasizing the need for long-term solutions, Mann highlighted education as a key tool to tackle poverty and social challenges in Punjab. He stressed that investing in education is crucial for building a more equitable and prosperous future, distancing his administration from the alleged failures of past regimes.
The chief minister's remarks underscore ongoing political tensions in Punjab, with the AAP government positioning itself against legacy parties while advocating for accountability and reform.
