Punjab Chief Minister Appeals for Uninterrupted Fuel and Fertilizer Supply Ahead of Critical Wheat Harvest
In a crucial development for India's agricultural heartland, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made an urgent appeal to the central government to guarantee enhanced and uninterrupted supply of essential resources. The request comes as Punjab prepares for a monumental wheat harvest projected at 140 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), with Mann emphasizing that any disruption could severely impact harvesting operations and grain movement across the state.
Critical Meeting with Prime Minister Modi
Addressing the media during a press conference in Chandigarh on Saturday, Mann revealed that he had raised this pressing issue directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a virtual meeting held on Friday evening. The Chief Minister articulated the state's immediate requirements clearly, stating that Punjab's agricultural machinery fleet—comprising tractors, trolleys, harvesters, and trucks—demands consistent fuel availability to function effectively during the harvest season.
"Punjab is likely to produce 140 LMT of wheat this year. To ensure smooth harvesting and transportation of the crop, regular supply of petrol and diesel is essential. A large number of agricultural vehicles will be deployed, so maintaining fuel availability is crucial for the larger public interest," Mann explained during his briefing.
Current Stock Situation and Supply Assurance
Despite his urgent appeal to the Centre, Mann sought to reassure Punjab residents about the current supply situation. He confirmed that the state maintains adequate reserves, with 12 to 14 days' stock of petrol and diesel and approximately six days' stock of LPG—levels he described as normal for this period.
"Supply is continuing uninterrupted and there is absolutely no need for panic among citizens," Mann asserted, directly addressing concerns about potential shortages. He provided operational data to support his claims, noting that 71,000 requests for LPG refills had been received until Thursday, with an impressive 69,000 already delivered to consumers.
Anti-Hoarding Measures and Helpline Launch
The state government has implemented rigorous monitoring and enforcement measures to prevent irregularities in the distribution system. Mann reported that authorities have conducted 1,497 checks across the state, resulting in the seizure of 301 LPG cylinders from those attempting to manipulate the system.
To further streamline grievance resolution, the Punjab government has launched a dedicated helpline—0172-3321001—specifically for addressing LPG, petrol, and diesel-related issues reported by citizens.
Punjab's National Food Security Contribution
Highlighting Punjab's indispensable role in India's food security framework, Mann outlined the state's substantial grain reserves. Beyond the anticipated 140 LMT wheat harvest, Punjab currently has 41 LMT of wheat already stored in government godowns, along with 139 LMT of paddy from previous seasons.
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for efficient stock management, urging the Centre to deploy additional special trains to transport pending foodgrain stocks from Punjab. "Existing wheat and rice stocks must be lifted promptly to create adequate storage space for the incoming wheat crop," Mann stated, noting that Punjab possesses covered storage capacity of 155 LMT.
Additional Demands: Fertilizer and LPG Equity
Looking ahead to the upcoming agricultural cycle, Mann requested the Centre to ensure timely supply of DAP fertilizer before paddy transplantation begins on June 1. He also advocated for greater equity in LPG distribution, seeking a reduction in the refill waiting period in rural areas from 45 days to 25 days—matching the standard already established in urban regions.
Political Critique of Foreign Policy Dependencies
In a pointed political commentary, Mann criticized what he characterized as the central government's excessive dependence on external approvals for fuel imports. "Though we claim to be a Vishav Guru (world teacher), we seek permission from the White House to obtain fuel from Russia for one month. Are we transforming into Vishav Chela (world disciple)?" he questioned rhetorically.
Mann urged the Prime Minister to leverage diplomatic channels and personal international relationships to secure uninterrupted supply of essential resources, ensuring that 140 crore Indians do not face avoidable difficulties due to resource constraints.
Appeal Against Panic Buying and Hoarding
Concluding his address, Mann issued a firm appeal to citizens against panic buying and hoarding of essential supplies. He attributed recent queues at some petrol pumps to unnecessary panic rather than actual shortages and warned that authorities would take strict action against hoarders and black marketers.
"I strongly urge people not to pay attention to rumors. Comprehensive steps are being implemented to check black marketing of LPG cylinders," Mann affirmed, noting that the Chief Secretary is personally monitoring supply chains to maintain stability.
