Mass Protest Planned by Punjab Education Employees Over Salary Reductions
In a significant escalation of their ongoing dispute, a total of 1,007 employees from the Punjab education department have announced plans to hold a major rally in Dirba on April 18. This collective action comes as a direct response to the state government's controversial decision to implement salary cuts, which has sparked widespread anger and frustration among the affected staff members.
Threat of Unconventional Protest at Finance Minister's Residence
The protesting employees have issued a stark warning, stating their intention to leave their children at the residence of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. This dramatic move is rooted in what they describe as broken promises. "We shall also leave our children at the residence of finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema, who had repeatedly assured us earlier that salaries won't be cut," declared one employee, highlighting the depth of their disillusionment.
Background of the Salary Cut Controversy
The conflict traces back to a resolution passed by the Punjab cabinet during a meeting held on September 8, which formally approved the salary reductions for these 1,007 employees. This decision was officially notified on September 23, 2025, setting the stage for the current turmoil.
However, according to sources within the employee group, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema had provided assurances in subsequent discussions that no such cuts would be implemented. "But during a meeting with finance minister Harpal Cheema, we were assured that there would be no cuts," a source explained. Despite these promises, the education department proceeded to enforce the order on February 24, 2026, triggering immediate backlash.
Previous Protests and Postponed Meetings
In reaction to the implementation, employees organized a protest march to the Chief Minister's residence in Chandigarh. This demonstration turned confrontational when authorities deployed water cannons against the protesters. Following this incident, a meeting with the finance minister was scheduled for February 27 in an attempt to resolve the issue.
Unfortunately, this meeting faced multiple postponements. Initially rescheduled to March 5, it was later moved to April 10. "On April 10, when the employees went for the meeting, officials informed that it has been postponed again," the source added, detailing the series of delays that have exacerbated tensions.
Implications and Broader Context
The planned rally in Dirba represents a critical juncture in this ongoing dispute, underscoring the growing unrest among public sector employees in Punjab over fiscal policies. The employees' threat involving their children adds a highly emotional dimension to the protest, potentially drawing increased public and media attention to their cause.
As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the state government's response to the April 18 rally and whether further negotiations can avert a more intense confrontation. The outcome may have significant implications for labor relations and governance in the region.
