Punjab Farmer Ends 1.5-Year Protest Atop 400-Foot Tower

A farmer in Patiala, Punjab, ended his 1.5-year-long protest atop a 400-foot mobile tower after receiving assurances from the state government. The farmer, identified as Gurdev Singh, climbed the tower in 2022 to demand compensation for his land acquired for a highway project and relief from mounting debts. His protest drew attention to the plight of farmers facing similar issues in the region.

Background of the Protest

Gurdev Singh, a resident of Patiala district, had been living on a platform atop the tower since July 2022. He refused to come down until the government addressed his demands, which included fair compensation for 4 acres of land taken for the Patiala-Bathinda highway and a waiver of loans he had taken from banks. His protest became a symbol of farmer struggles in Punjab, with supporters providing him food and supplies via a pulley system.

Government Intervention

After prolonged negotiations, the Punjab government sent a high-level delegation that included senior officials from the revenue and agriculture departments. The delegation assured Singh that his demands would be considered, including an enhanced compensation package and debt restructuring. Following these assurances, Singh descended from the tower on January 15, 2024, marking the end of his 18-month vigil.

Reactions and Aftermath

Local farmer unions hailed the development as a victory for peaceful protest. However, they stressed that the government must fulfill its promises promptly. Singh, upon descending, thanked his supporters and expressed hope that other farmers with similar grievances would also get justice. The incident has reignited discussions on land acquisition laws and farmer welfare in Punjab.
