Punjab Municipal Polls on May 26, Counting May 29

The State Election Commission of Punjab has announced that polling for 105 municipal bodies, including eight municipal corporations, will be held on May 26. Vote counting is scheduled for May 29. State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhury shared these details during a press conference in Chandigarh on Monday.

Municipal Corporations and Other Bodies

The elections will cover eight municipal corporations: Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala, and Pathankot. Additionally, polls will be conducted for 76 municipal councils and 21 Nagar Panchayats. In total, 2,019 wards across the 105 municipal bodies will go to the polls.

Model Code of Conduct in Effect

With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has been enforced with immediate effect across all concerned areas.

Voter and Polling Station Details

Chaudhury stated that there are 3,672,932 registered voters for these municipal bodies, which include 1,773,716 women. Polling will take place at 3,977 stations, operating from 8 am to 5 pm on the election day.

Nomination Schedule

The filing of nominations will begin on May 13, with the last date for submission being May 16. Scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on May 18, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until May 19.

Security Arrangements

In light of the elections, over 35,000 personnel from the Punjab Police will be deployed to ensure safety and security during the polling process, the Commissioner added.
