Punjab Opposition Intensifies Demand for CBI Probe into Warehousing Officer's Death

The political opposition in Punjab has significantly escalated its demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of warehousing corporation officer Gagandeep Singh Randhawa. On Tuesday, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) launched coordinated attacks against the state government, criticizing its handling of the sensitive case and raising serious questions about the investigation's integrity.

BJP Announces Formal Action Plan

Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar declared that his party would formally approach Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Wednesday to officially request a CBI investigation into the matter. "The bereaved family will accept nothing less than a CBI probe, and we stand firmly with them in this demand," Jakhar stated emphatically. He further elaborated that numerous contradictions in the government's official version of events have created substantial doubts about the transparency and thoroughness of the current investigation.

Jakhar specifically highlighted conflicting narratives surrounding former minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, questioning whether he voluntarily resigned from his position or was compelled to step down by authorities. Additionally, he pointed to discrepancies regarding whether Bhullar surrendered to law enforcement or was formally arrested, suggesting these inconsistencies undermine public confidence in the entire investigative process.

Shiromani Akali Dal Echoes Demand for Impartial Investigation

Echoing the BJP's position, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal directly appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to immediately recommend a CBI probe into Randhawa's death. Badal questioned the state government's response to alleged extortion-related cases connected to the incident, demanding greater accountability and transparency. "The chief minister should tell the people of Punjab why he has maintained silence on this critical issue for four long years," Badal asserted during his statement.

Sukhbir Singh Badal further accused the current administration of engaging in selective enforcement and politically motivated actions. He emphasized that the gravity of the case necessitates an impartial, independent investigation to ensure that justice is served without any political interference or bias.

Mounting Political Pressure on Punjab Government

The opposition's coordinated push represents a significant escalation of political pressure on the Punjab state government regarding this case. The unified demand from both major opposition parties highlights growing concerns about the investigation's credibility and the need for an external agency to examine the circumstances surrounding Gagandeep Singh Randhawa's death.

This development occurs amid broader political tensions in Punjab, with opposition parties seeking to hold the government accountable for its handling of sensitive cases and alleged administrative inconsistencies. The call for CBI intervention reflects deepening mistrust in state-level investigative mechanisms and underscores the opposition's strategy to leverage this issue for political advantage while advocating for procedural justice.
