Punjab Unveils Massive Sports Infrastructure Plan to Tackle Drug Epidemic
In a significant move aimed at combating the drug menace and promoting healthy lifestyles, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Friday an ambitious plan to construct 6,000 new stadiums across the state. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to steer the youth away from substance abuse and towards sports and physical activities.
Major Infrastructure and Development Announcements
During his address, Cheema also detailed substantial financial allocations for regional development. A sum of Rs 50 crore has been earmarked for infrastructure works in the Raja Sansi assembly constituency, while Rs 20 lakh has been allocated specifically for the development of village Lopoke. These measures underscore the government's commitment to holistic growth alongside its anti-drug efforts.
The announcements were made at the inauguration of the inaugural Kabaddi Cup held at the Shaheed Bhai Mewa Singh Lopoke Stadium in Lopoke, Amritsar. Cheema emphasized that such initiatives are crucial in restoring the glory of 'Rangla Punjab' by fostering a vibrant sports culture.
Emphasis on Sports as a Drug Prevention Tool
Highlighting the transformative power of sports, the minister stated, "Youth can be protected from drugs by connecting them with sports. Through sports, Punjab's youth will once again bring laurels at national and international levels." He further explained that the Punjab government has made special budgetary provisions to promote sports and create new employment opportunities for young people, viewing athletic engagement as a key deterrent to drug use.
Progress in Anti-Drug Campaign
Speaking on the ongoing 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh' campaign, Cheema reported significant successes in the fight against drug trafficking. "Yudh Nashein Virudh has achieved major success, with several big drug traffickers being arrested and sent to jail," he claimed. The minister reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug menace from its roots, ensuring a safer environment for Punjab's citizens.
Recognition of Organizers and Tribute to Martyr
Cheema praised the efforts of Sonia Mann, who is in charge of the 'Yudh Nasheyan Virudh' campaign, and her team for organizing the commendable Kabaddi Cup event. The tournament was held in memory of Shaheed Bhai Mewa Singh Lopoke, a revered figure and the first Sikh martyr in Canada, who was a resident of village Lopoke.
Sonia Mann expressed her gratitude, saying, "Shaheed Bhai Mewa Singh Lopoke was a great personality who sacrificed his life for his nation and community. I thank the residents for organizing the Kabaddi Cup in his memory." This event not only honors his legacy but also promotes community engagement through sports.
