Punjab Government Announces Land Ownership Rights for Residents in Nangal and Talwara
In a significant move aimed at resolving long-standing land disputes, the Punjab government has declared its intention to confer ownership rights on shopkeepers and residents occupying more than 800 acres of surplus land in the townships of Nangal, Talwara, and adjoining areas. The announcement was made by Education Minister and Sri Anandpur Sahib MLA Harjot Singh Bains on Sunday, marking a pivotal step towards providing legal security to thousands of families.
Ending Decades of Uncertainty
This decision is expected to bring an end to decades of uncertainty for the numerous families who have been living on this land without clear ownership titles. The surplus land, originally acquired from local residents for dam projects, has been a source of contention and legal ambiguity over the years. Minister Bains emphasized that the government is now taking proactive measures to address this issue, ensuring that the land reverts to the state after the completion of the dam projects, as per the original acquisition terms.
Formal Communication to BBMB
The water resources department of Punjab has issued a formal communication to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), asserting that the surplus land rightfully belongs to the state. Minister Bains alleged that the BBMB, which was established to operate dam projects, has over the years acted beyond its mandate in dealing with such properties. This move by the state government is seen as a corrective action to reclaim control over the land and ensure it is used for the benefit of the local populace.
Policy Framework for Ownership Rights
The government is currently framing a comprehensive policy to grant ownership rights to the existing occupants of the land. Under this policy, occupants will be required to pay charges as per the applicable stamp duty, making the process transparent and legally sound. This initiative is designed to regularize the status of the residents and shopkeepers, providing them with the legal documentation needed to secure their homes and businesses.
Additional Developments: New Judicial Complex
In related news, Minister Bains also revealed that a site has been identified for the construction of a new judicial complex in Nangal. This development is part of the government's broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and public services in the region, complementing the land ownership initiative. The new complex is expected to improve access to justice and legal services for the local community, further boosting the area's development.
The Punjab government's announcement has been welcomed by residents and stakeholders, who view it as a positive step towards resolving long-standing land issues and promoting socio-economic stability in Nangal, Talwara, and surrounding townships.
