Punjab Traders Accuse AAP Government of Neglect and Political Gimmickry

In a scathing critique from Bathinda, Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal president Amit Kapoor on Thursday launched a sharp attack against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. Kapoor accused the administration of ignoring the state's trading community for four long years and now staging what he termed a "political gimmick" by suddenly expressing concern for their welfare.

Economic Strain and Administrative Harassment

Kapoor emphasized that traders continue to operate under severe economic strain, compounded by administrative harassment and a growing sense of insecurity. Despite these challenges, he asserted that the government has offered no meaningful relief to alleviate their burdens.

The Mandal president specifically targeted the state's claims of simplifying and making Goods and Services Tax (GST) procedures transparent. He argued that these assertions do not match the ground reality, where GST officials are "reaching every market and lane, exerting undue pressure on traders."

Impact on Small and Medium Businesses

Small and medium businesses, already reeling from the effects of inflation and weak consumer demand, are reportedly being slapped repeatedly with notices, enquiries, and penalties. Kapoor alleged that in several cases, officials inflate violations to meet targets, with complaints of extortion emerging from across Punjab.

"The trading community pays taxes, generates employment, and strengthens the economy, but receives neither respect nor security," Kapoor stated, highlighting the perceived injustice faced by traders.

Rising Insecurity and Lack of Justice

Adding to the economic woes, Kapoor pointed out that incidents of theft, loot, and threats have increased, leaving traders feeling unsafe in their own establishments. He noted that many families who have suffered loss of life or property have not received adequate compensation or justice from the authorities.

Warning of Statewide Agitation

In a stern warning, Kapoor declared that if the government fails to take concrete policy decisions soon to address these issues, the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal will launch a statewide agitation. This potential protest underscores the deepening frustration among traders and signals escalating tensions between the business community and the AAP-led administration.

The allegations from Bathinda paint a grim picture of the trading environment in Punjab, with calls for immediate governmental action to restore confidence and support for one of the state's key economic pillars.
