Rahul Gandhi Launches UDF Campaign with Five Key Guarantees for Kerala
In a significant political move, Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi officially inaugurated the United Democratic Front's (UDF) campaign for the upcoming Kerala assembly elections on Saturday. Addressing a large rally in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, Gandhi outlined five major guarantees that the UDF promises to implement if voted to power.
Five Key Promises for Kerala's Development
The Congress leader announced a comprehensive package of welfare measures designed to address various sections of Kerala society:
- Free Bus Travel for Women: Women will enjoy complimentary travel in KSRTC buses across the state.
- Educational Support: College-going girl students will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000 to support their education.
- Enhanced Welfare Pensions: Monthly welfare pensions will be increased to Rs 3,000, providing greater financial security to beneficiaries.
- Comprehensive Health Insurance: A new health insurance scheme named after former chief minister Oommen Chandy will offer coverage of up to Rs 25 lakh for every household.
- Entrepreneurial Support: Young entrepreneurs will have access to interest-free loans of up to Rs 5 lakh to start or expand their businesses.
Call for Alliance Unity and Criticism of Rivals
Rahul Gandhi emphasized the importance of unity within the UDF alliance, delivering a strong message to its leaders. "This message comes directly from the people of Kerala," he stated, urging alliance members to work cohesively if they aim to return to power.
Using a vivid analogy, Gandhi called on UDF leaders to "dance together" to defeat what he described as the "corrupt" Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. He stressed that such unity was essential to ensure a better future for Kerala's citizens.
The Congress leader also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Kerala for their unwavering support during politically challenging periods, acknowledging their role in strengthening the opposition.
Allegations Against Central Government and Ruling Parties
Gandhi launched a sharp critique against the central government, accusing it of selective targeting through central agencies. He questioned why enforcement agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had taken action against opposition leaders while allegedly sparing Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family from similar scrutiny.
"The BJP and the CPM are indirectly working together in Kerala," Gandhi alleged, suggesting a covert collaboration between the national ruling party and the state's ruling front.
Employment Focus and Economic Vision
Outlining the UDF's economic agenda, Gandhi stated that a UDF government would prioritize employment generation by actively supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and creating new opportunities across various sectors in Kerala. This focus on job creation forms a central pillar of the alliance's development vision for the state.
Satheesan's Puthu Yuga Yatra Concludes with Confidence
Earlier in the day, the Puthu Yuga Yatra led by opposition leader V.D. Satheesan concluded its journey in Thiruvananthapuram. Addressing supporters, Satheesan declared that the people of Kerala had embraced the march as their own, interpreting it as a strong endorsement of the "new Kerala model" proposed by the UDF.
Expressing robust confidence about the alliance's electoral prospects, Satheesan predicted that the UDF would form the next government with more than 100 seats. He pledged that the alliance would undertake comprehensive efforts to rebuild and revitalize the state upon assuming power.
The UDF's campaign launch marks a crucial phase in Kerala's political landscape as parties prepare for the upcoming assembly elections, with Rahul Gandhi's announcements setting the tone for the opposition alliance's platform and priorities.
