The district administration of Rajsamand in Rajasthan has significantly intensified its ongoing anti-encroachment and beautification campaign targeting the historically significant zones of Haldighati and Rakt Talai. This decisive action follows explicit directives issued by the Rajasthan High Court, mandating the removal of all illegal constructions and the preservation of these crucial heritage areas.

The High Court's intervention on January 28 came after it took official notice of a detailed report published by The Times of India on December 14, 2025. The report, titled "Highway to Haldighati, Where Chetak's Leap Meets Truck's Roar," brought to light the severe issues of encroachment and escalating traffic chaos threatening the sanctity of the historic battlefield region.
In response, the administration has formally written to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) seeking necessary permissions. The requests include authorization to demolish a government school and staff quarters situated within the protected premises of Rakt Talai. Additionally, the administration plans to undertake comprehensive beautification work in the Haldighati area, which involves installing protective railings, informational signage, and public dustbins.
Phase Two of the Restoration Drive
This proposed action marks the commencement of the second phase of a larger anti-encroachment initiative. The first phase, completed several weeks prior, successfully involved the demolition of numerous illegal shops and structures located on land under the jurisdiction of local municipal authorities.
Rajsamand District Magistrate Arun Kumar Hasija provided detailed insights into the current phase. "We are now dealing with structures that fall within the ASI-protected premises," Hasija explained. "Since this work involves areas under the direct control of the ASI, we have sought their formal permission. The demolition and subsequent restoration work will commence immediately upon receiving the necessary approvals."
Comprehensive Restoration and Preservation Plan
The administration has outlined a meticulous plan for the restoration of these historic sites. A key component involves the demolition of a government school located within the Rakt Talai complex. This step is crucial to restore the landscape to its authentic historical state, as documented in official records.
District Magistrate Hasija elaborated on the broader vision:
- The staff quarters situated outside the core heritage site will be repurposed and converted into a designated public parking area.
- The historic pond (talai) inside the Rakt Talai complex will be revived, cleaned, and refilled with water to restore its original character.
- Protective railings will be installed around the sacred Haldighati battlefield site to prevent visitors from walking or running over the protected area, thereby maintaining its sanctity.
- Speed breakers will be strategically placed on the adjacent highway to control the speed of fast-moving heavy vehicles, mitigating potential vibration damage to the fragile historical site.
The district administration is legally obligated to submit a detailed compliance report to the Rajasthan High Court, documenting all actions taken under these directives.

While historians and heritage experts have largely welcomed the administration's proactive measures, they emphasize the need for careful, sensitive execution. Chandra Shekhar Sharma, Head of the History Department at Meera Girls College in Udaipur, acknowledged the positive step but highlighted a critical requirement.
"The demolition drive is undoubtedly a move in the right direction," Sharma stated. "However, this sacred site demands a comprehensive, long-term conservation plan. Its fate may not see a significant and permanent change unless it is officially declared a 'Place of National Importance,' which would ensure sustained protection and dedicated resources."
