Rajasthan Opposition Leader Slams CM's Silence on Delimitation as Critical Issue
Leader of the Opposition in Rajasthan, Tikaram Jully, on Thursday, asserted that delimitation is not a routine administrative process but a pivotal subject that will shape the democratic future of the state. He sharply criticized Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for his silence on the matter, attributing it to inexperience in handling such significant constitutional affairs.
Jully Demands Immediate All-Party Meeting
Jully emphasized that delimitation is an extremely sensitive issue, directly impacting Rajasthan's political landscape by determining the number of Lok Sabha and Assembly seats. He demanded that the CM convene an all-party meeting without delay to facilitate a detailed discussion on both the technical and political aspects of delimitation. "Should the CM not seek the views of all political parties of the state on this serious issue?" Jully questioned, highlighting the need for inclusive dialogue.
Political Discussions Intensify Nationwide
Jully noted that political discussions on delimitation are intensifying across the country, with Chief Ministers of South Indian states being vocal about their concerns due to the direct effect on seat allocations. In Rajasthan, the reorganisation of seats will completely alter geographical and social representation, making it crucial for the state government to have a clear stance. He expressed dismay that the Rajasthan government lacks a definitive position during such a sensitive period.
Criticism of Government Functioning
Raising questions over the government's efficiency, Jully pointed out that the BJP-led administration has failed to conduct municipal bodies and panchayat elections on time. "How can a government that cannot manage local elections be expected to handle a major constitutional change like delimitation?" he asked. Jully accused the government of prioritizing the weakening of democratic institutions over robust governance.
Women's Reservation and OBC Protests
On the issue of women's reservation, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took a swipe at the BJP, crediting the Congress party for milestones such as India's first woman President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and Speaker Meira Kumar. He added that the BJP has never had a woman national president. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Congress OBC workers protested at Jantar Mantar against the Women's Reservation Bill, opposing the lack of OBC quota for women and its introduction without an updated caste census, deeming it unjust.
Conclusion: Urgent Call for Action
Jully concluded by reiterating the urgency of addressing delimitation, warning that delays and inaction could undermine Rajasthan's democratic framework. He called for immediate steps to ensure transparent and participatory decision-making to safeguard the state's political future.
