Rajesh Agarwal Named New Maharashtra Chief Secretary

Senior IAS Officer Rajesh Agarwal Takes Helm as Maharashtra Chief Secretary

The Maharashtra government made a significant administrative change on Friday by appointing Rajesh Agarwal (IAS 1989 batch) as the new Chief Secretary of the state. This key appointment sees him replacing the outgoing Chief Secretary, Rajesh Kumar, and is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the state's top bureaucratic position.

Agarwal's Return to Maharashtra and Varied Experience

Rajesh Agarwal's appointment comes shortly after his return from a central deputation in Delhi. Upon his return to the state, he was initially positioned as the Additional Chief Secretary in the state general administration department. In this role, he was entrusted with the critical portfolios of administrative reforms and good governance.

His extensive experience in the central government includes serving as the Secretary of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and the Secretary of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. His career portfolio in Delhi is notably diverse, having also held positions such as Director General Training in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and Joint Secretary in the Department of Financial Services.

Before his central government assignment, Agarwal had a substantial tenure in Maharashtra, where he served as the Principal Secretary of the Information Technology department, giving him valuable insight into the state's digital infrastructure and initiatives.

Administrative Transition and Tenure Expectations

The transition marks the end of Rajesh Kumar's term. Kumar, who took over as Chief Secretary on June 30, was originally set to retire on September 30. However, his tenure was extended by three months, lasting until November 30.

It is anticipated that Rajesh Agarwal will secure a one-year tenure as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra. His return to the state and immediate appointment to this pivotal role underscores the government's confidence in his administrative capabilities and his broad experience across both state and central governance.

This change in leadership is a major development in the state's administrative machinery, and all eyes will be on Agarwal as he steps into one of the most powerful bureaucratic roles in India.
