Ranchi Petrol Pump Attacks Trigger Security Crisis Among Fuel Dealers
A series of coordinated attacks on petrol pumps in Ranchi's outskirts has created an atmosphere of fear and panic among fuel dealers, with many now reluctant to operate during night hours. In a concerning pattern, four petrol stations have been targeted by unidentified armed miscreants within just four days, with three of these incidents occurring during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday alone.
Violent Incidents and Financial Losses
The attacks, carried out by weapon-wielding gangs, have resulted in injuries to petrol pump employees while substantial cash amounts running into lakhs have been looted from the establishments. The brazen nature of these assaults has exposed significant security vulnerabilities in the city's peripheral areas.
Fuel dealers have urgently appealed to Ranchi police to intensify night patrolling, particularly on the city's outskirts, to ensure business operations can continue smoothly. The dealers have specifically requested expedited investigations into the recent cases and swift apprehension of the perpetrators.
Delegation Meets Police Authorities
A delegation representing city petrol dealers met with Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ranjan on Thursday to voice their mounting concerns. During the meeting, they strongly urged police authorities to strengthen security arrangements around fuel stations.
Pramod Kumar, spokesperson for the Jharkhand Petroleum Dealers Association, revealed the depth of anxiety within the industry: "The recent incidents have sparked panic among both dealers and petrol pump staff. Employees are particularly afraid to work night shifts. During our meeting with the SSP, we specifically appealed for police outposts in the Ring Road area, which often remains deserted and may have emboldened the attackers."
Additional Security Requests and Contingency Plans
The dealers have made several specific security requests to authorities, including:
- Enhanced police protection during cash transportation from fuel stations to banks
- Regular night patrols in vulnerable areas
- Expedited investigation of recent attacks
- Establishment of temporary police outposts in high-risk zones
Rajhans Mishra, President of the South Chotanagpur Petroleum Dealers Association, issued a stern warning: "We are awaiting police response to our concerns. If the security situation does not improve significantly, we may be compelled to shut down stations during night hours as a protective measure."
Immediate Measures and Long-Term Concerns
In response to the security crisis, some dealers have already begun implementing their own protective measures. Kumar explained the psychological impact on staff: "Our employees have become apprehensive of every customer visiting fuel stations following these attacks. While we're considering employing private security personnel, such measures would offer limited protection against armed criminals."
The dealers convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss the escalating situation and coordinate their response. According to Kumar, police authorities have provided a positive initial response to their concerns, though concrete action plans are still being developed.
The petroleum industry in Ranchi now faces a critical juncture, balancing business continuity against employee safety concerns. The effectiveness of police response in the coming days will likely determine whether fuel stations can maintain normal operations or face significant disruptions to their night-time services.
