S-PAC Announces Exclusive Support for Saurashtra Candidates in Madurai South

The Saurashtra Political Action Committee (S-PAC) has made a significant political announcement, declaring that it will extend its support exclusively to two candidates from the Saurashtraian community who are contesting from the Madurai South constituency. This move underscores the committee's focused strategy to secure political representation for the community in this key electoral battleground.

Significant Voter Base in Madurai

Addressing reporters in Madurai, K R M Kishore Kumar, a retired DGP and convenor of the coordinating committee, highlighted the demographic importance of the Saurashtra population in the region. He stated that Madurai district is home to approximately two lakh voters from the Saurashtra community, with a substantial concentration in Madurai South alone.

"In Madurai South constituency, around 40,000 voters belong to our community," Kishore Kumar emphasized, pointing to the potential electoral influence this group holds. This figure forms the basis for the committee's targeted approach in this constituency.

Campaign for Political Representation

The committee's efforts to gain political visibility for the Saurashtra community have been ongoing. In December of last year, S-PAC organized a conference in Madurai where they presented several demands to leaders of all major political parties. A key request was for parties to field candidates from the Saurashtra community in the Madurai South constituency.

"Accepting our request, two parties have fielded candidates from our community — M M Gopisan for TVK and B M Sumathi for NTK," Kishore Kumar revealed. He further appealed to Saurashtra voters to rally behind either of these two candidates, framing it as a crucial step toward community representation.

Extensive Campaigning Plans

Dinesh, the treasurer of S-PAC, outlined the committee's ambitious campaigning strategy. S-PAC plans to conduct extensive outreach across the Madurai South constituency, combining efforts with the candidates and operating independently.

  • Door-to-door campaigns to personally engage with voters
  • Urging support for either M M Gopisan or B M Sumathi
  • Creating election awareness in other constituencies to promote informed voting choices

This grassroots approach aims to maximize voter turnout and support within the Saurashtra community.

Addressing Past Electoral Disappointments

Kishore Kumar also addressed the community's recent electoral setbacks, which have fueled the current push for representation. He noted that in the 2022 Madurai corporation election, not a single councillor from the Saurashtra community was elected across all 100 wards.

"In the past, we won in four or five wards, but this time, none of our candidates succeeded. This has caused deep disappointment within our community," he stated, highlighting the motivation behind S-PAC's intensified efforts.

Broader Support Beyond Madurai

The committee's support extends beyond Madurai South. Kishore Kumar mentioned that in Kumbakonam, NTK is fielding advocate M Anand, a candidate from the Saurashtra community. He expressed confidence that the community would extend full support to Anand as well, indicating a wider strategy to boost Saurashtra representation across multiple constituencies.

This announcement by S-PAC marks a focused attempt to leverage the community's voter strength for greater political influence, responding to past disappointments with a organized campaign for the upcoming elections.
