SAD Mobilizes Relief Efforts for Punjab Farmers After Devastating Hailstorms
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has issued a directive to its functionaries and workers across Punjab, urging them to provide immediate assistance to farmers whose crops have been severely damaged by recent unseasonal rain and hail. The party has called for the distribution of essential supplies, including wheat, chaff, and green fodder, to support the affected agricultural community during this critical time.
Strategic Meeting Planned to Coordinate Relief Operations
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal announced that a crucial meeting of constituency in-charges and district presidents will be held in Chandigarh on Wednesday. This gathering aims to finalize the modalities and logistics of the relief exercise, ensuring efficient and widespread delivery of aid to farmers in need. The announcement was made following a rally at Budhlada on Tuesday, where Badal emphasized the party's commitment to standing with the farming community.
Criticism of AAP Government's Response to Agricultural Crises
In his address, Sukhbir Singh Badal launched a sharp critique of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He accused the administration of abandoning farmers, highlighting that compensation for paddy crop damage from last year's floods remains unpaid. Badal drew parallels to the 2022 floods, recalling how SAD stepped in to distribute fodder, seeds, and medicines when the AAP government allegedly failed to act promptly.
"Just as we rescued farmers during the devastating floods last year after they were abandoned by the AAP government, I urge our leaders and workers to reach out and extend help now," Badal stated. He further challenged claims made by AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal in Gujarat, who asserted that Punjab's AAP government had provided compensation at Rs 50,000 per acre within a month of the floods. Badal pointed out that despite unseasonal rain and hailstorms flattening wheat crops across approximately 1.25 lakh acres, no immediate compensation has been disbursed to the affected farmers.
Senior Leaders Echo Concerns Over Government Inaction
Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal and senior party leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder joined in condemning the AAP government's handling of the situation. They accused the administration of repeatedly failing to deliver timely compensation to farmers, exacerbating their financial and emotional distress. The leaders emphasized that such delays undermine the stability of Punjab's agricultural sector, which is vital to the state's economy.
The unseasonal weather events have caused significant damage to wheat crops, threatening the livelihoods of countless farmers.
