Samrat Choudhary Takes Over as Bihar's New Chief Minister
In a landmark political development, Samrat Choudhary has been appointed as the new chief minister of Bihar, succeeding Nitish Kumar, who stepped down to join the Rajya Sabha. This appointment marks the first time a BJP leader has assumed the chief ministerial role in the state, signaling a significant transition in Bihar's governance after more than two decades of Nitish Kumar's dominance.
Background and Political Journey
Speculation about Samrat Choudhary's elevation intensified following Nitish Kumar's nomination by the JD(U) for the Rajya Sabha and his subsequent swearing-in as an Upper House member on April 10. At 57 years old, Choudhary has steadily climbed the political ladder in Bihar, establishing himself as one of the BJP's most formidable organizational figures in the region. Currently holding the Home portfolio, he has played a pivotal role in the NDA government, frequently representing the BJP alongside Nitish Kumar at key official and political events.
Born into a political family, Choudhary is the son of veteran leader Shakuni Choudhary, a former Army personnel who later became an influential politician in Bihar. Like his father, Samrat Choudhary's political career has spanned multiple parties, including associations with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal (United) before he joined the BJP in 2017. This move proved to be a major catalyst for his career advancement.
Rapid Rise in the BJP
Since joining the BJP, Samrat Choudhary's ascent has been swift and notable. In 2023, he was appointed as the president of the party's Bihar unit, solidifying his position as a key strategist and mass leader. He later served as deputy chief minister and retained this role in the NDA government formed after the 2025 assembly elections, securing a victory from the Tarapur constituency in Munger district.
OBC Representation and Political Strategy
Choudhary is widely recognized as an important OBC face for the BJP, representing the Koeri-Kushwaha community, which wields significant electoral influence in Bihar. His caste appeal, combined with an aggressive political style, has made him central to the BJP's expansion strategy in the state. Before the BJP and JD(U) renewed their alliance in 2024, Choudhary was one of Nitish Kumar's most vocal critics. In 2022, he publicly vowed not to remove his saffron turban, known as muretha in Bihar, until Nitish Kumar was ousted from power.
This symbolic pledge came to a dramatic end in July 2024 when, after the NDA alliance returned to office, he visited Ayodhya, offered the turban to Lord Rama, shaved his head, and took a ritual dip in the Saryu river.
Future Leadership and Transition
In recent years, the BJP leadership has increasingly projected Samrat Choudhary as the party's principal face in Bihar. During the 2025 Assembly campaign, he was at the forefront of the BJP's outreach efforts, and his deployment in other politically significant states, such as West Bengal, further reinforced perceptions that the party was grooming him for a larger leadership role.
With his appointment now confirmed, Samrat Choudhary assumes charge at a critical moment of transition in Bihar politics. He is tasked with leading the BJP into a new era, navigating the challenges and opportunities that arise after Nitish Kumar's long and defining chapter in the state's history.
