VD Satheesan Outlines UDF's Strategy, Criticizes Pinarayi Vijayan's Leadership
Satheesan: UDF is Broader Platform, Targets 100+ Seats in Kerala

VD Satheesan Positions UDF as Broad Political Platform Ahead of Kerala Elections

In a comprehensive interview, Opposition Leader VD Satheesan articulated a bold vision for the United Democratic Front (UDF), characterizing it not merely as a coalition of political parties but as an expansive platform encompassing diverse social groups, opinion leaders, influencers, and even former Left sympathizers. This strategic repositioning comes as the UDF seeks to regain power in Kerala following consecutive assembly election defeats.

Rebuilding Congress and UDF After Electoral Setbacks

Satheesan acknowledged the demoralizing impact of the UDF's second straight assembly poll defeat in 2021. "My primary mission was to revitalize the UDF and steer it back to power," he stated. He credited cooperative leadership and effective teamwork for overcoming previous internal factionalism. "Dominant groups no longer control the party. When selecting candidates, electability became our foremost criterion," Satheesan explained, highlighting a pragmatic shift in approach.

The Congress leader clarified that unlike some parties, the Congress does not announce its chief ministerial candidate before elections, adhering to the All India Congress Committee's post-election procedure.

Critique of CPM Leadership and Internal Dissent

Satheesan launched a sharp critique against the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist), asserting, "The party governing Kerala is not Left; they are not communists but extreme right. We represent the Nehruvian Left." He claimed approximately 90% of former Left fellow travelers now support the UDF.

Regarding CPM leadership, Satheesan described Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan as a solitary leader who "dictates everything." He noted unprecedented internal rebellion within the CPM across multiple districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Kannur, accompanied by significant vote erosion.

Confident Seat Projections and Electoral Strategy

Satheesan projected the UDF would secure over 100 assembly seats, with particularly strong performances in Malabar region districts (45-50 seats) and sweeps in Idukki and Pathanamthitta. He attributed this optimism to heightened anti-incumbency sentiment compared to local body elections, where personal influence plays a larger role.

"My local election predictions proved accurate. Assembly elections will yield better results due to stronger anti-incumbency factors," Satheesan asserted.

Addressing Coalition Dynamics and Minority Concerns

When questioned about concerns within the Christian community regarding the Indian Union Muslim League's potential influence on cabinet positions, Satheesan dismissed these as "CPM narratives." He referenced IUML leader Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal's recent affirmation of the alliance, noting the CPM's subsequent characterization of IUML as communal.

"If Muslim League weakens, extremist minority outfits would fill that space. Currently, Muslim League confronts radical forces," Satheesan argued, defending the coalition partner's role.

Personal Political Philosophy and Constituency Connection

Representing North Paravur constituency for 25 years with increasing victory margins, Satheesan described his constituency as "family." He practices inclusive politics, assisting constituents across party lines post-elections. "People here are exceptionally kind and affectionate toward me," he remarked.

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy serves as his political model, particularly regarding respectful discourse. Satheesan noted enduring personal attacks from CPM's cyber cell, which he claims produces daily multimedia content against him. "I avoid baseless allegations," he maintained, while substantiating his criticisms with specific examples.

Exposing Alleged CPM-RSS Connections

Satheesan presented detailed allegations regarding CPM's relationships with other organizations. He cited historical Jamaat-e-Islami associations with CPM over four decades, producing video evidence contradicting the Chief Minister's denial of such connections.

More controversially, Satheesan alleged that after becoming Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan met RSS leaders at Mascot Hotel through intermediary Sri M. "I directly questioned him in the assembly about this closed-door discussion with RSS leaders. He remained silent," Satheesan revealed.

Development Vision and Economic Revitalization Plan

Satheesan promised sustainable, environmentally conscious development if UDF returns to power, criticizing the LDF's SilverLine semi-high-speed rail project as potentially environmentally disastrous. "Climate change considerations will determine project approvals. We've consistently advocated as green MLAs," he affirmed.

On economic management, Satheesan identified multiple governance failures. He criticized the state's poor GST implementation despite Kerala's consumer-state status making it a potential top beneficiary. "Tax administration requires restructuring. Our tax growth languishes below 10%, but proper reforms could achieve over 30% growth within a year," he claimed.

Innovative Job Creation and Startup Ecosystem

Satheesan outlined ambitious economic stimulation plans including stringent treasury leak prevention, investment promotion, and a "global job watchtower" with expert monitoring of worldwide employment trends. "We'll align educational curricula with emerging opportunities, introducing courses in artificial intelligence, biogenetics, machine learning, and other high-demand fields," he explained.

The plan includes comprehensive startup support: "Graduates should secure employment or receive startup assistance. We'll provide techno-mentors for management experts lacking technical expertise. Our goal is launching over 10,000 startups, ventures, and MSMEs within one to two years."

Satheesan also addressed "reverse remittance," where over five million interstate workers send earnings outside Kerala, causing significant capital outflow that requires economic countermeasures.

Intellectual Pursuits and Literary Preferences

Recognized as among Kerala's most well-read politicians, Satheesan maintains a disciplined reading routine during travels and dedicates at least one pre-sleep hour daily to reading. His favorite author is Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk, whose complete works he has read. He particularly praised Pamuk's novels My Name Is Red, Snow, Istanbul, and Night of The Plague.

Through this extensive interview, VD Satheesan presented the UDF as a revitalized, broad-based political alternative ready to address Kerala's governance challenges with innovative economic policies and sustainable development approaches.
