The Congress leadership is facing mounting pressure over the selection of Kerala's next Chief Minister despite the United Democratic Front's landslide victory in the state assembly elections. The decision has been delayed due to a face-off between prominent contenders V. D. Satheesan and K. C. Venugopal, with the party now scrambling to build consensus while avoiding factional fallout.
Key Meetings Held by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge
Senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge held crucial meetings with the three main contenders for the chief ministerial post: V. D. Satheesan, K. C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala. The discussions aimed to gauge the support each candidate enjoys within the party and among alliance partners, as well as to explore possibilities for a consensus candidate.
Internal Support and Public Sentiment Diverge
According to party insiders, a significant number of Congress MLAs have expressed their support for K. C. Venugopal, citing his experience and organizational skills. However, public sentiment and the views of alliance partners appear to lean in favor of V. D. Satheesan, who is seen as a more popular and mass-based leader. This divergence has complicated the decision-making process for the party high command.
Efforts to Build Consensus
The Congress leadership is now engaged in intense back-channel discussions to arrive at a decision that satisfies all stakeholders. The party is wary of any factional fallout that could weaken the newly formed government. Both Satheesan and Venugopal have been asked to remain patient and cooperate with the party's final decision. Meanwhile, Ramesh Chennithala, a former minister, is also being considered as a possible compromise candidate.
The delay in announcing the chief minister has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who accuse the Congress of internal squabbling at a time when the state needs strong leadership. However, party leaders maintain that the process is democratic and will result in the best choice for Kerala.
