The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) made a significant political move on Thursday by withdrawing its candidates in two crucial assembly constituencies in Kerala. This decision comes amid intense electoral battles and strategic calculations ahead of the upcoming polls.
Strategic Withdrawal in Manjeshwar
In the high-stakes Manjeshwar assembly constituency, SDPI has withdrawn its candidate Ashraf M K. This constituency features a direct contest between BJP's former state president K Surendran and UDF candidate, incumbent MLA AKM Ashraf. The decision follows extensive pressure from various political parties, social organizations, and coordination committees who argued that fielding an SDPI candidate would split the anti-BJP vote and potentially hand victory to the BJP.
The 2021 election results underscore the delicacy of this situation. IUML candidate AKM Ashraf won the seat by a razor-thin margin of just 855 votes, making every vote crucial in this politically sensitive region.
Organizational Turmoil and Resignation
The withdrawal has created internal turmoil within SDPI. Candidate Ashraf M K revealed that while state leaders initially encouraged him to contest, they later directed him to withdraw his nomination. Expressing his disappointment, Ashraf announced he would resign from his organizational post within the party, highlighting the internal conflicts this strategic decision has triggered.
SDPI state leaders held an urgent meeting at Uppala in the morning and issued the directive for withdrawal, demonstrating the party's responsiveness to broader political considerations beyond individual candidacies.
Second Withdrawal in Mankada
Simultaneously, SDPI has withdrawn its candidate C H Ashraf from the Mankada assembly constituency in Malappuram district. This dual withdrawal indicates a coordinated strategy across multiple constituencies where SDPI's presence could potentially benefit the BJP by dividing opposition votes.

SDPI state president CPA Latheef explained the party's initial decision to field candidates as part of their "positive politics" philosophy. He stated that the party traditionally contests elections based on principles rather than calculating which party might win or lose due to their participation.
"The decision was made as part of the policy of setting the stage for a future win by contesting in the seat," Latheef said, emphasizing the party's long-term perspective. However, the practical realities of Kerala's complex political landscape, where vote-splitting can dramatically alter outcomes, ultimately compelled the strategic withdrawals.
