Security Tightened at Former Punjab Minister's Residence Amid Suicide Fallout
In a significant development following the tragic death of a government official, police authorities have implemented stringent security measures at the residence of former Punjab minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Laljit Singh Bhullar in Patti town. This action comes in the wake of the suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, the district manager of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation in Amritsar, who allegedly took his own life on March 21, 2026.
Barricades Erected to Prevent Clashes
Authorities have installed barricades on all roads leading to Bhullar's home to prevent potential clashes between political factions. The move was prompted by a protest march led by Congress workers, including former MLA Harminder Singh Gill, who staged a dharna outside the residence demanding Bhullar's immediate arrest. In response, a large number of Bhullar's supporters also gathered, escalating tensions in the area.
Video Allegations and Legal Proceedings
The situation intensified after a video surfaced in which Gagandeep Singh Randhawa purportedly claimed he was facing harassment from Bhullar and others. Following this, the Ranjit Avenue police in Amritsar have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), marking a formal investigation into the allegations. Bhullar resigned from his ministerial position shortly after Randhawa's death, adding to the political ramifications of the incident.
Political Repercussions and Public Outcry
The suicide has sparked widespread public outcry and political maneuvering in Punjab, with the Congress party leveraging the incident to criticize the AAP-led government. The police's proactive measures, including the deployment of additional personnel and barricades, aim to maintain law and order while the investigation unfolds. This case highlights ongoing issues of harassment and accountability within the state's political and administrative circles.
As the investigation progresses, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that security protocols are upheld to avoid any untoward incidents in the volatile environment.
